I can resist no longer. I hereby issue an infraction to Doug for bickering with the OP. ;)

Rather than identify a favorite rare coin that I can never own, I'll choose this one from my U.S. type collection. It is a conditional and CAC (for whatever that's worth) rarity and, given it's natural toning, probably hard to replicate in gem state.

You know, very few flame wars occur on this site and it's because there are a lot of relatively intelligent people here who dislike confrontation and are very good sticking to the subject and sharing their knowledge.

The few flame wars that I have seen are generally fueled by one or two individuals who generally just won't stop arguing or just can't let anything go.

I personally have tired of it. I wish that everyone would just relax, chill out, get back to coins, and STOP taking every person's differing opinion as a personal attack!!!!

Geez, already!! GET BACK TO COINS!!!!

What you guys call arguing, I call a healthy debate. Unless it degenerates into petty bickering and name calling which it has not in this thread.

Now Doug, I have one big problem with your statement. Look at the word in red and substitute the word occasionally. Once that is done, it should be possible to provide me with at least one example of a US coin that is rare and costs under $500. With your statement, we should be able to find hundreds of examples of rare coins under $500. Sorry but that aint gonna happen.

You guys can deny that rarity affects value all you want but that doesn't make you right. The coins you guys are going to bring up to prove me wrong are the exception, not the rule. Deliberately finding obscure rare world coins that nobody collects does not prove that rarity has no bearing on value.

I will repeat my request. Show me a rare US coin worth less than $500

Funny thread, I'll have to read all the posts later. From a fight over cheerios, which was really the cheerio dollar to expounding on a definition. At least ppl are learning and that's the main thing!! I'm glad for you BNB, at least in your retirement you're still making entertaining posts. :D good for you!!

I guess, I don't qualify. Do not have any $500 or more in value. Waiting for my wife to go out of town for that purchase. I have not crossed the bridge yet to getting coins of that value. I am still filling in the holes from my childhood collection. I will tell you that my first $500+ coin will be the 09 S VDB. That's my initial goal right now is to complete the Lincolns.

Does my house count? Now that I know is of value and worth more than $500.

They only go far, if the person who apologizes, actually follows through, and doesn't do this again.
I've accepted your apologizes, and it seems as though, every thread, you are apologizing to somebody. I really hope you mean it

HOLY @#$%! That is one of the most beautiful coins I've ever seen! I don't believe I've ever seen anything like it... Now I got a new one, on my WANT list... :D

Well if you don't own one yet, I guess I better beat you to it!
Another beautiful coin, even if it isn't yours...(YET)

I don't have many coins anymore but a while ago I bought a 100 Ounce gold bar at around $560 an ounce. Today that would be about 100K or so?

I recently bought 1883 PCGS PF65Cameo CAC Cents and No Cents V Nickels for just a pinch more then $400 each. Relatively rare pieces in that grade.

I think it is very entertaining to see some of the legacy coins you all have. I take no offense to that. Like I said I will be going after honest abes pride and joy (S VDB). There is always somebody with one more or a bigger toy than you. In this case it is coins. Dream on. Thanks for everybody sharing their "lil ones".

Exactly. As an example my classic head cost me $1200, but it is in no way 'rare'. Some dealers have cases of classic head coins...I think people use the term rare too loosely and I would love to own a pre-1834 gold coin some day.

I really need to bring this up. Why re we limited to JUST US coins?

I understand that you are most knowledgable in that field, but that is simply not playing fair.

It has nothing to do with my knowledge. The fact is that World coins just don't have the same level of demand that US coins experience. Therefore, it is very easy to find an obscure rare world coin with a very limited collector base and trot it out at a low price just to prove a point.

Your example is no different. If I understand correctly, your avatar is one of two known examples. But it is an error coin, correct. What is the rarity of the coin without the error? And is there really a market for ancient errors?

You can trot out all of the world coins you want, but rest assured that I will show what a US coin with a similar extant population sells for.
