    From my father's collection
    [IMG]

There is one of each (mint mark?)
On the reverse of the slab it is engraved D, S, P ???
One has that reddish glow, I think that is good, right?

Do you think these are genuine? They were appraised at a coin shop in 2002, and a value of $1000 for the 3.

    Please help me educate myself.
See more of my father's collection at: What's it worth?

    Thanks,

Not the greatest pictures to judge but sure look like 1955 Double Dies. Better pictures would help but you would probably have to take them out of the capital holder to avoid the glare.
All of those are from the P mint. He probably just put it that holder to hold the 3 Lincoln cents in a nice display.
Have you thought about sending those in to a coin grading service such as NGC or PCGS? That way you could be sure they are authentic and get grades from the coins and also see if they have any problems such as being cleaned or not.
    Very nice by the way!

This one sold for $825 on Ebay not certified and looks pretty similar to grade of the coin on the upper right.

And here is one certified by PCGS for $1650. This is why you need to get them certified. To make sure they are authentic and get the most for them.

The one on the top left looks suspicious to me. It very well could be the picture but the bust looks really wrong... the profile in particular... Any chance of a better pic of that coin? These definitely need to be certified.

I see what you are saying on that coin. Nose looks bigger and the color is suspect but may just be the pictures.
Also bottom coin looks like it has some PVC on it. Rose does it look like the bottom coin has some green stuff on it? If so you may want to address that if you decided to send it in. The experts here can help you with that. Probably just a nice soak in acetone.

    Very nice coins

The doubled die was only made in Philadelphia (no mintmark). My guess is that since he had 3 of them, he used a premade year-set holder. So, I believe that the mintmarks are there because of the holder and not because of the coins.

As for the value, the picture is not clear enough to get a good grade. From what I have seen of this set of coins, I am going to assume that the coins are XF, AU and unc. Just for talking purposes assuming they are real (you said they were once appraised) and assuming my grades (little moire than a guess) and then assuming that they would get certified, they could be worth ~$1500, ~$2000, and the unc (assuming it really is unc) could be $2500 - $10,000. Before you get your hopes too high, there are a lot of "assuming's" in there. Pretty much, those coins would have to be seen in hand to give you an accurate valuation, although better pictures of both side could enable us to get close.

I have a TPG or a grading service grade 1955/55 just so you be 100% sure.
there were counterfeits of the 1955/55 since the 60's

Thanks for clearing up the mint mark issue. It sure makes sense that it is just the holder and not the coins.

I will try to get a better photo, I don't however want to take them out of the holder at this stage. I will go with a better camera and try again for both sides.

I know that even though they were appraised at a reputable coin shop that does not guarantee them authentic. If they were graded at one of the grading companies, would that clear up every doubt?

Going back to the safe box on Monday.

Thank you all, it is a wealth of knowledge for me.

My father would have loved this site, he passed before sites like this existed.
I did show him ebay, and coins on there, before he passed in 2001

The way he purchased coins in the 1960's was amazing.
    I call them 'gentlemen notes':smile
I believe he would read in the trade paper of a coin available for sale. He would write a note and mail it, with all the 'formalities' --- Would the gentleman consider this price.....
I am sorry to inform you that regrettably, this coin has been sold....
    It must have took ages!

I remember seeing many of these notes for coin deals.
And I think it was a trust transaction through the US mail. You send the money and hope you get the coin.
Think of that, nowadays every little thing is scammed in some way!

Thanks again for the help, and I wish my father could have been in your ranks.

Would you mind explaining the grades of XF, AU and other grades?

Are all coins graded with the same letters?

There are some people in this thread that are purely guessing at what they are looking at.

I would need better pictures of each coin before I would even hazard a guess on these. You could be leading this person far astray. Although blurry, there seems to be some potential , at least for the coin on the upper left.

Before this guy starts spending lots of money on slabbing fees, it would be better if we could see some better pictures or scans.

These coins are frequently counterfeited and copied. They are called doubled dies, if real.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Guilty as charged. The lady asked for our guesses and I obliged as best I could - with a lot of caveats. However, I also recommended that she get them looked at in hand FIRST and called them "doubled dies".

Sorry, but the new pictures don't help me much. The bottom is most likely XF, but it might stretch to AU. The top right is most likely AU. I doubt it, but it might stretch to UNC. The top right confuses me. I cannot tell if it is AU, UNC red/brown, or cleaned.

    Hello all-

I went to the Summer FUN show today! Daunting to say the least.
The man at the ICG booth gave an opinion on the 3 1955D doubled dies.
And it was concurred by one dealer (self-proclaimed best cent expert on the floor)

The upper left coin has been color-enhanced, and will not grade, but I think I will send it in for a Genuine label. The other two cents are, upon appearance, genuine and grade worthy!

Tommorrow, I'll go back to the show. I'm signing up for the PCGS Platinum 1 yr account, which gives 8 free grades, for $199.
