Yes, but I think you are misunderstanding what I meant when I classified a Intermediate Strike. I defined the classification criteria of each group. Here is a direct quote from my original post.

I think you are proving my point about the "Intermediate" years without realizing it. ;)

No I understood it clearly, for those years it was either a hit or miss.
Some were fully struck, some were weakly struck

I think what I meant by my statement, was that, out of those intermediate years, I proved that you can have well struck and poorly struck, thus confirming your oringal statement of a wide variety

Then I think we are in agreement. ;)

Just got another O minted dollar
I paid a couple cents under retail, for an 1885 O NGC MS63 a fwe minutes ago... And I'm excited...
I'll take good pics when they come in, and see if we have a full strike, or a weaker strike

Okay I just bought another O minted morgan dollar, an 1898 O NGC MS64
This will be the first MS64 in my collection, I will take pics of this along with the 85 O and compare them to my 1883 and 1884 O morgans, and see which one of my intermediate struck morgans, has the best struck, and which has the worst. :)

Okay camaro, I got another pretty well struck dollar, that is in the "intermediate" section...
    I'm doing pretty good! LOL!
If that 1885 O I bought is another well struck one, I'll have 3 out of 4 well struck morgans in the intermediate years! :)

An engineering study performed at the New Orleans Mint in 1900 showed that their high die failure rate was due to improperly softened planchets.

FWIW, Ive got some O Morgans that are very badly struck and an entire roll of 04o that rival the 81s coins for a crisp strike.

Its my impression that from time to time new Orleans got -hand me down- dies from the other mints, perhaps because they lacked time (production schedules/fewer machines and or skill with the refinishing bowls. Varying quality could also be as simple as varying top down management thru the years influencing quality control and work ethic.

Just like Im stuck in the 60s musically Im stuck on Morgans as far as coins so I havent noticed if other denominations from New Orleans had as much variation in quality thru similar years to the Morgan? Can anyone comment on the other coins minted there?

Interesting article. I do have a 1884 O Morgan$ graded MS64 in an old green pcgs slab. I have to tell you the coin an excellent 64; perhaps could be upgraded to 65. It has very nice shiny proof-like devices. Maybe an exception to the "intermediate" strike attribution.

Not an exception. I defined my intermediate category as a "very wide strike quality" in the original post. So, those coins can be found with amazing strikes but also with quite poor strikes and everything in between. So, it sounds like your coin would be on the nicer side of the strikes.

What a difference several months makes....All those 63-64's are outta here!
    Show me the 65's :kewl:

Said it before and I'll say it again, amazing article Camaro, it has quite a bit already ;)

I had not read this, good work. I cringe when people say it is an O so it is weakly struck. ONe intersting note is it the mint mark you can collect in DMPL, though some will have to be AU.

I think there are a couple intermediate dates I would put in the well stuck category but overall I agree.

With pretty much any subject like this you're going to find differences of opinion depending on who is talking or who wrote the book. For example, in this book http://www.coingrading.com/strike1.html by one who is considered by many to be quite the expert you'll see differences and similarities in regard to quality of strike.
