Hi, Does the Jay W. Johnson, 36th U.S. MINT Director, PCGS label add any value to this coin?

What does the "D" mean in the label - PR69DCAM?

Assuming it's a true 2001 ASB PR69DCAM what is it worth?

    Thanks

My guess is that it came from one of those TV coin shows. Probably no premium unless you like that sort of labeling.

I bought it at the Whitman Show in Baltimore. Wanted it as a companion to my gold eagles. Told the dealer I didn't care about the Jay W. Johnson PCGS label, He says only two thousand were pacakaged that way. When I get some time I'll email PCGS to ask them if it's included in their price guide.

Another attempt at making an otherwise common coin a rarity....

What's up with PCGS giving it a special label. I like PCGS but this is scam.
I don't think it adds any value to the coin.

no, I hope for your sake you didn't pay a premium for the label if you don't like it

That's funny. I would have loved to hear what the dealer would have said about it if you were the one trying to sell it to him. LOL! What a joke.

I've seen and heard that mint director in commercials for selling gold. Just propaganda. You got a nice commemorative though. The 'D' stands for deep cameo. That's PCGS' own special designation for proof coins that exhibit exceptionally mirrored fields against highly frosty devices. NGC's designation is Ultra Cameo, sometimes abbreviated in auctions as PF70 UC. Means the same. Oh yeah....both sides have to exhibit the same high quality to get the designation.

I don't know that the designation affects value that much. It should be the norm for quality these days. Maybe results in slight premiums.

I paid $185.00 for the coin which is a $20.00 premium over the same coin (I think it was "D") He was asking $299.00 for the coin signed coin. . I told him the Jay Johnson signature didn't mean anything to me. I should've checked out more vendors before I bought it. The same coin in proof state was $150.00 from another vendor. Oh well.

But the coin available from the other vendor probably wasn't graded in a PCGS slab??

NGC's price guide lists a PF69 UC at 200.00 right now. So you paid what you would pay for just about any slabbed PF69 from any dealer across the country. You paid a fair price.

Unless you're a huge fan of mint directors, the ones with the signatures are a total gimmick and a rip off. Nobody cares. I doubt anybody is buying those.

One was in a PCGS slab PR69 I don't remember it it was PR69Dcameo. I go to most coin shows in the Baltimore area and usually find good deals. Looks like this time I paid about retail which is okay because I like the coin.
Went back again today and asked a couple of dealers about the PCGS Jay W. Johnson label. None of them said they'd pay a premium for that label.

    Good point.
