Guess I'd rather like to have the newer one, as I think both are modern restrikes. As for the German text, it says:

German empress, queen of Hungary and Bohemia, Archduchess of Austria 1740-1780. Mother of 16 children.

The Taler has been minted since 1753. Had major significance as a trade taler in the Vorderer Orient (ie. roughly the Middle East) and many parts of Africa, partly until today.

Don't know whether "today" still applies today :) but it sure was in use for a long time.

You are welcome..... Hey Chris, lets get the old dowagers name right. Here it is a real mouthful:
Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Dowager Holy Roman Empress; Queen of Hungary, of Bohemia, of Dalmatia, of Croatia, of Slavonia, of Galicia, of Lodomeria, etc; Archduchess of Austria; Duchess of Burgundy, of Styria, of Carinthia and of Carniola; Grand Princess of Transylvania; Margravine of Moravia; Duchess of Brabant, of Limburg, of Luxemburg, of Guelders, of Württemberg, of Upper and Lower Silesia, of Milan, of Mantua, of Parma, of Piacenza, of Guastalla, of Auschwitz and of Zator; Princess of Swabia; Princely Countess of Habsburg, of Flanders, of Tyrol, of Hennegau, of Kyburg, of Gorizia and of Gradisca; Margravine of Burgau, of Upper and Lower Lusatia; Countess of Namur; Lady on the Wendish Mark and of Mechlin; Dowager Duchess of Lorraine and Bar, Dowager Grand Duchess of Tuscany

Thanks, I'll type out the translation on a small card and place it in the case for future interest for the Grandkids.

The must have had big envelopes back in those days :D

Our local coin store has a bin of MT's on the counter. I asked the owner about them and he said all his are modern. He said you can still get them new from the mint if you order 10,000 or more at a time.

You can actually order single MTT pieces from the Austrian Mint. I just checked their web store http://www.austrian-mint.com/shop?l=en and from customers in Germany (where I am) they charge between 20 and 30 euro per piece, depending on whether you want the BU or proof version, with or without blister pack.

Note that, when you select "United States" as your country settings, you are redirected to the ECI website (dealer/distributor in the US). They charge about 20 dollars for the BU version. Plus shipping, I think ...

:p Holy mackrel !!!! Learned a few things about ole MT. Have you ever compared the MT to a Brit Crown of Victoria's Jubilee? You would think they are sisters. Traci

Maria Theresa was the mother of Marie Antonette the famous French Queen but not related to Victoria (a century later). There was a lot of intermarriage among European Royals but devout Catholics like M.T. avoided the Protestant English. Keeping family trees straight in this group is a problem made no easier by large families and repetative names. M.T. had 11 daughters (most died young) all named Maria.

Hi, here is another rare object: a Maria Theresia Thaler which was made into a baby's rattle. Could anyone help me how to identify the date? Thanks in advance, mirjam

The date can be found on the side featuring the eagle, roughly between 10 and 11 o'clock so to say. Yours is dated 1780, I think. Neat rattle by the way. :D
