Hello all, got this bad boy in the mail today, not bad grade what interested me the most is the doubling on the date, around some of the letters but mainly at the tip of the beak has a spot where it’s doubled. On the full picture if you zoom in I think the doubling is more apparent. This could just be machine doubling but would that affect the date, some letters, and the tip of the beak? Either way pretty cool coin. Thank you!
Good question. I've only noticed it on the outer devices in the past, but not sure about the rest. Per the described theories, I suppose it's possible. @ldhair Larry - who is Snow?
Rick Snow he’s the man that is the man that identifies varieties and is trusted by PCGS, NGC, and other known companies for mainly IHC and Flying eagle cents
I'm going with MD since the doubling appears to all be on the west side of the devices and lettering which indicates to me that there was movement of the die or the coin when it was struck.
That’s a nice lamination going through the eagle. On the “doubling,” your photos are too good, that’s all from the strike.
My vote is a worn die, which would explain the date and other doubling. Just a guess on my part. @Fred Weinberg or others may have a more definitive answer.
I think MD is my go to I looked at more MD dates on other coins and it looks very similar. Still a pretty eagle! Just missed out on a high AU 1858 eagle small letters, someone had a much higher bid then expected
