I read somewhere that since everyone and their brother has been collecting state quarters that business strike clad collections will not be worth much for a long time and that the way to go was proofs. I have started purchasing clad proofs and silver proofs for the last month or so. Does anyone have an opinion on this strategy?

    thanks!

Ms 67 or better non-satin quarters from 2005 onward (PCGS or NGC) will probably be a thing. They can't be pulled from mint sets so it is hard to find those super-fly ones. But keep in mind that I am the guy who predicted that gold would dump. http://www.cointalk.com/t64636/

I'm a little confused on the satin designation. Can you please give an explanation? Keep in mind that I'm still a Coin Idiot!

Oh, from 2005 onward the mint started to make the mint set coins satin instead of business strike. By doing that they eliminated the possibility of getting really nice business strike (or ms) coins from the mint sets, now we have to hunt through roll after roll to find a decent one. You may have to go through a whole box of rolls or more to find an ms67 or better (you would be lucky to find one out of 5000).

Agreed! Some thing I have been saying for quite a while now!

As to whether or not the "Proof Sets" strategy will work as an investment? I think that most of the increases in price for these sets has already taken place (from Mint Issue price to now). I personally don't believe that these sets will increase very much in value for a fairly long time.

So IMHO neither the MS coins nor the proof coins are a prudent strategy for realizing appreciative value.
