OK - We are getting closer to finishging this up. First, let me point out that the above coin from Panama was made in the US by the same designer as the Ike Dollar (and is signed on the design).

Onward, the next two coins where the reason why I purchased this set. I wanted these Uraguay coins for a gift, and they do not disappoint. These are the prized 1969 FAO Uraguay coins in Bronze Pattern and Silver MS 1000_peso_1969_Uraguay_r_bronze.png 1000_peso_1969_Uraguay_o_bronze.png 1000_peso_1969_Uraguay_r.png 1000_peso_1969_Uraguay_o.2.jpg 1000_peso_1969_Uraguay_o.png

If you look - you might see the engraved rim.

And finally the 10 Rupee Indian Lotus coin. Great lions on this coin. 10_Rupees)1972_India_lotus_r.jpg 10_Rupees)1972_India_lotus.jpg

Interesting set, and thank you for sharing here.

I actually think I have almost all of these (excluding the pair from Uruguay, which are pretty cool designs) - fun fact, first time I saw it (and for a really long time afterwards) my brain didn't realize the Poland 10 Zlotych "Man's First Food" was a nursing infant and a breast.

I thought it was an apple core...haha

Yeah - you just try to delve into the mind of the Polish National conscous to try to understand what they were trying to accomplish with that coin. It is one of the most unusual designs I'd seen. Most of these countries have had dark histories either in this period or shortly after, include Rwanda (genocide), Poland (behind the iron curtain and the trawls of a failed revolt to that time), Tanzania, The West African Union (oye - no ending of famine and hunger there), Panama and Algeria and even India. Not a happy vacation destination in the bunch.

Uruguay might be nice, and apart from the intestinal repercussions of my visit to Panama (I think I was served a glass with ice in it on my next to final day there; my system has never been the same since) I actually had a lovely time during my visit. The fresh ceviche I had on the pier was one of the two or three best things I've ever eaten in my entire life. :)

Don't have any of these what were the coins for?was it because there was foregin food shortage at that time? or is it just to promote food and resources.

This website has a ton of info about FAO coin program.

Basically, from what I've read the goal was to be primarily educational and to promote the "Food for all" slogan or some variant of that (for example, including images of food/crops/agriculture) while also earning funds through seignorage (making money by printing money) that could then ostensibly be used to help feed people.

As opposed to "Food for Some" or "Food for those that earn it". It is a communist plot by the UN to cover up bad governance with a spiffy slogan that the starving masses of N. Korea can get behind.
