Heya guys, I just got the new Charlton guide 2010, and they went in depth with the varieties of 5 cent silvers. I have never really known much about the series but would love trying out my hand at identifying some varieties.
Post 'em if you got 'em!

These are a few of my metal detecting finds. Unfortunately, because of the site they were dug in (hardpacked soil), I nicked them :headbang:. I've found about 15 this year. My oldest is 1893 but it's pretty smooth.

Anyway, this is a sampling. This first one is in the best condition of them all (of course, it too, is nicked.)

Very nice finds , I do have quite a bit of these but my best one has to be my 1904 in AU58.

Can you guys get close ups of the dates on the two 1896's, 1899?

    Hello Green18,

The Canadian silver 5-cent is not like the US silver Jefferson nickels during the war. The Canadian silver 5-cent coins are more akin to the US silver half dimes.

    Very best regards,

Here's an interesting one, tilted to bring out a detail.

Thanks '89. I'm totally a fish out of water regarding these issues but I'm lovin' the pictures. :D (info too)

Kurt, that is very cool! It's no everyday you see a die crack like that, weird direction!

    Snaz,
Yeah--pretty dramatic! That die was on its last legs.
    It's on the large-H variety too. :)

    The 1893 Looks like a 3 over 2.
    Is that a listed variety??
It is followed by a 1858 which looks like a large date over small date
