No you all have it wrong actually.

I am talking about rarest. Not that you OWN but that you would LIKE to own(or in the small case, ALREADY own)

See, when we talk about your most valuable coins, you're going to start listing JFK Proofs, Franklin halves, etc. stuff that I just unfortunately want to filter out of this particular thread.

So, when I say rarest, I mean, what do you hold in YOUR mind as your rarest coin?

Again, for me, a 1937 D 3 Legger is that answer for me and I happen to own it(or about to)

And yes, usually these coins do not go for under $500 so that's why the qualifier stays..

    Thanks

Some people may find one type of coin more rare than another and that oozes subjectivity. Well, that subjectivity is what I want here.

but your 3 legger isn't the rarest (is it even rare?)...A lot of coins can beat it in rarity, but not in value.

once again, go no further than my Philip below

1937-D 3 Legger is rare and yes, holds a lot of value in my eyes and is above $500. So that would be a perfect example of what I'm talking about here.

Also, there are numerous coins with the same rarity...yet, if I were to own one, it would be my Cordius, but it isn't $500, like I already said.

Did you even read my post, or just the first seven words?

Edit: Ah interesting how you edited that snark little remark you made.

Yep, rare and market price are two different things.

    rare 1 (râr)
    adj. rar·er, rar·est 1. Infrequently occurring; uncommon

I have hundreds of error coins that are unique and therefore rare.

For a non-error, regular issue US coin, I would probably post my 1922 no D cent. Only one die pair was used for this date.

For a proof manufacture variety, I'm tempted to post a 1961 Half Dollar with DDR.

Wow, this thread is just bizarre. BNB, you have to understand that "rare" and "valuable" are completely and totally different things. I don't think you see that. It's a common thing for someone who is new to this hobby to misunderstand.

For example, a 1909-S VDB is a very valuable coin but you can go to almost any show and find many examples in a wide range of grades. But, in any grade the price is high. This coin is valuable but not rare. On the other end of the spectrum, there are many coins which are very hard to find but when you do they don't cost a lot. An example of one of these is my 1940-F German 5 Pfennig BU with lots of luster. These coins are incredibly hard to find with good surfaces and luster...but mine cost about $15. But, I can promise you that it is MUCH more rare than a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent.

I'm a bit confused as well. I would think that a mintage of 100, with a survival rate of 62.5%, per Kevin Flynn, and 10 or so known to be small motto, that nets out to approximately 52 in existance(ALL conditions), would be rare. Or at least Medium Rare. :rolling:

I'll post on whatever thread I please! It's not my fault you don't understand the concept between rare and valuable.

Well, I have quite a few coins that are rare, but none that I've paid $500 dollars for. Rare and price aren't always associated with one another. For example, the 09 S VDB is by no means a rare coins, but sales for high prices. I have coins that have 1/5 the mintage that sell for under $100.

Look, I really REALLY don't need the darn webster dictionary definition here. I am not going to be belittled and educated at my own thread here!!

I'll define my version of rare for this thread like it implies from the start,

There are coins that are rare. RARE. Simply choose what you believe in your mind is your rarest coin that you think has an edge upon someone else's choice of their rarest coin. The bottom line is, from my experience, I don't think there is just ONE world's rarest coin. There are quite a few. And that's why this thread was made, for me and others to see what you the poster value as a very low mintage coin that you like a lot. And it'd be a plus if you owned it too!

Now knock it off some of you!

Here's my most rarest coin. :)

    Or there's this one:

Both carry quite a premium. The first one is a 1773 Virginia Half Penny, quite hard to find in that grade and the second is a 1787 Auctori Plebis Cent which are hard to find period. :D

But what if our idea of a rare coins doesn't value at $500?

Exactly, but that's why I put the filters here.

Above $500, low in mint and I mean LOW, and highly valued by you!

That's all... Do we have an exact mintage on the 1937-D 3 Legger? Last I checked, PCGS didn't have a clear reading on those numbers...

    Okay.

    $500 and above.

If it's below and it's rare, then are you talking about a coin that came in a cheerios box once that is made of plastic that maybe only 200 were ever made?

That's not a fine example in my view.

I'm talking about high contenders, and it really doesn't matter to me if you own it or not, it's more like a "dream coin that you just gotta have if you had all the money in the world and it happens to be one of very few!"

Nobody is trying to belittle you. We are trying to explain that there is a huge difference between rare and valuable. That's it. You ask for our rarest coin but it must be over $500? That's somewhat counterproductive as many rare coins are worth less than $500 and many common coins worth more. That's all I'm trying to say.
