Please guess the grade of the 1944-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, Full Steps or not, and the + grade.

MS 66 5FS ....lustrous and fairly clean...just snuck by as 5fs (I'm guessing the mark isn't significant enough to disrupt the steps)

64+not FS...I didn't use your formula of +1...just can't/don't see it as FS across part of the bottom step.

LOL, it isn't my formula, that is the standard that both NGC and PCGS use to determine five full steps.

So for the purposes of these threads, when guessing what the TPG will grade the coin, you kinda have to use their standard, unless you want to be wrong.

Don't feel bad though, NGC actually agreed with you for a long time. From their inception in 1987 to 2003, NGC required every Jefferson Nickel to have 6 full steps in order to qualify for the FS designation. In 2003, they finally relented, and created two separate designations, 5FS & 6FS. So if you ever see an NGC Jefferson Nickel with just an FS designation with no number in front, that means the coin has 6 full steps. For example:

I can't believe they gave that 67 with the cuts on the reverse. It's a wonderful coin, I'm just saying...

That photo isn’t the reveal, I was just showing an example of an NGC slab with FS designation. That coin was a 1940, the subject of the thread is a 1944-D.

I guess the little nicks and scratch across the columns? on the reverse, and whatever that is on his jaw below the ear kept it to
    MS66 FS

OK, so let's have it...or did I miss it somewhere in all of that...? I'll keep looking. Also, understood from your previous explanation that +1 was PCGS/NGC "formula" but since I didn't use it this time but recalled it was conveyed by/from you before, I indicated "your" in a casual format. Oh, yeah, and never saw an answer to what IS an official "step" to be counted...the dark/recessed (concave) lines or the nickel-color/convex lines, of which one is, or may be, the foundation that the columns rest on...? Or is that...any of this...also undecided and up for interpretation among TPGs, further confounding what is/isn't FS...??? It would be so easy if they'd all just get together and agree on a single standard and its definitions...like how our congress does business (not). Thx.
