I recently bought this from Lucernae on vcoins (he has one more) It’s definitely my favourite Roman Republic design. I love the wreath on the face it really makes the coin. In hand it’s very shiny and lovely. It’s gotta be the nicest type this Gellius is
Nice catch, Vamp. Cupla mine... RR Gellius 138 BCE AR Denarius Roma wreath Mars female captiveQuadriga S 109 Cr 232-1 RR Gellius 138 BCE AR Den Roma wreath Mars fem captive Quad S 109 Cr 232-1
It's beautiful. I still don't have a quadriga among all my Roman Republican coins, but I'd be very proud to own one like yours. PS: Just out of curiosity, did you have to wait a long time for Lucernae to get an export permit from the Spanish government? (If you're in the EU, I guess that wouldn't be necessary.)
Nice coin. I want one like this. I did not see the coin when it sold in 2015. MdA did not note the XVI and it sold for under estimate. I have not seen a similar one since. Lot: 238 | Gellia - Denier (138 av | Mail Bid Sale N°17 | Monnaies d'Antan | Sixbid
Very nice coin , perfectly centred. I also have been attracted by the wreath design , I have a similar obverse from Lucilius Rufus M Lucilius Rufus Denarius. 101 BC. Helmeted head of Roma right within laurel wreath; PV behind / Victory in biga right; RVF above, M LVCILI in exergue. Crawford 324/1; Syd 599.
..i paid for a coin coming from Barcelona..it made it to Chicago in 3 days..12 days ago...and hasn't shown any movement since...i contacted the dealer and ask him to put a trace on it but he said its out of his hands.......UPDATE:..just lQQked and its shows movement this morning
I believe US Customs monitors CT. Once someone squawks about “movement”, they just shift it over into the next room, then make a notation online so that you are happy with their progress...
This variation (With XVI instead of X mark of value) was originally documented in "Some Unlisted Varieties and Rare Dies in Roman Republican Coinage" by Pierluigi Debernardi, NC 2010, pp. 93-97. At the time of publication this was the only known example but I believe I remember seeing that a subsequent specimen has since emerged.
..ahaha...i would believe that...cause thats just what happened this morning...'processed through'...but that was it....
I forgot that I had one of them: RR Lucilius Rufus 101 BCE Ar Den Roma Biga Marius Victories S 202 Cr 324-1 I think my Biga was moving so fast, that the Wreath flew away...
