I'm single and I think this exchang I had this weekend at the Indiana State show explains why.

I had just purchased some very nice Conder tokens when I ran into my father at another table

Conder: Gosh these coins are getting expensive.
    Herbert : So are women.
Conder : True, and I think the coins are cheaper.
Conder: And they don't talk back to you.
Conder : And best of all, forty years years from now when you decide your tired of them and don't want them anymore, there will be someone there willing and eager to take them off your hands.

Having been married to an accountant for 37 years she still doesn't understand that the 452 cents in my collection are worth more than $4.52. It just doesn't compute.

I'm glad my spouse could care less. Her father left her a nice collection in which she had no interest whatsoever...so I raised my hand and she said "Here ya go!"

I am now official curator and caretaker for this collection and it will never be pried away!

I am almost certain that my coin collecting led to my divorce. I purchased a $900 SLQ and my wife found out, then flipped out. Despite my best efforts to assure her that I could easily sell the coin for a $100 loss at anytime, she continued to berate me.

Her tirade finally prompted me to speak my mind. I basically said what is the difference. I spent $900 on a piece of metal worth a quarter but I spend thousands of dollars on you and you aren't worth a damn. As I recall, the divorce proceedings followed shortly after that conversation.

My wife loves it when I get a new coin in the mail and show her it and explain it's significance to my collection ;)

That was HARSH!!! and I am sympathetic for your loss of the marriage, but that is sure one hellova story you have for being a coin collector to be able to share, basically priceless. But than to further assess the situation, if she wasn't worth a damn, than you just saved your self many future thousands of dollars and headaches:)

Wow, what I thought golf was the breaker upper. Somewhere there is a forum with some woman saying, "my husband does not understand why I buy all these shoes".

My wife completely understands that the ASEs she bought for me as a present for $5 each several years ago are now worth more than triple that amount. So she doesn't consider coin purchases a waste of money.

My wife doesn't mind, since my (small) collection is mostly self financed or gifted. She did like the Braille Dollar we bought at the mint (Philly) together (and insisted on running her fingers over the braille!).

But for my birthday she got me a card: "redeemable for any coin, up to x". It makes me feel better about it. She will also help me roll search, and promotes me trying to fill my son's Jeff Nickel albums.

Many great stories are being told here. This is CoinTalk at its finest. May this thread continue to have both long and strong legs so that it can keep running for a good while and have many more comments posted.

No longer have a good wife. Lung cancer returned her to her maker. She was a country girl, raised on a farm, and loved antiques. She was collecting things found in early country kitchens and had a washboard collection, butter churn, pie safe and was after stoneware items. Friday evenings were our date night. We regularly attended a local auction and supper was a couple of hot dogs and a cup of beer, at the auction house snack bar. As expected, she readily supported my coin collection.

Her love for antiques was so great, she had a magnet sign stuck to our refrigerator that said --- Some women love antiques so much they marry one.

So sorry to hear of your loss, she sounds like a wonderful woman and you a very smart man to see that.
What kind of coins do you collect?

Sorry about your loss, Dick. My wife is going through cancer now. Fortunatelly it hasn't diminished her lack of understanding of the hobby I love.

My wife tolerates my coin collecting habit. Some times I think she's shocked by the amounts I spend. Since I started collecting SLQs the statement: "You just spent over $100.00 for a quarter!?!" is often heard around our house. I always tell her these are an investment for the future, and a legacy to pass down for our kids. She seldom buys that line.

It seems if I soften her up with some jewelry, her tolerance level goes up for a while though! ;)

i get made fun of by the girl friend. she calls me dumb for "wasting" money on coins. but its ok for her to spend $50 every month for tanning, plus another $60 on lotion. not to mention nail money and her $300+ coach purses!

i try to get her interested and tell her interesting facts about coins or whatever, but i get the same response.."you know not to talk to me about sports, coins, or computers".
