Late Byzantine Empire AFTER 1204 is not my area. Description from the seller: >>BYZANTINE EMPIRE.Andronicus II and Michael IX 1295-1320.AR.Basilikon. Mint of Constantinople. ( 2.04g, 20.05mm,6h) IC XC KVRIE BOHΘEI, Christ enthroned, right hand raised in benediction, star either side. Reverse.ΑVΤΩΚΡΑΤΟP - ΕC PWΜΑION; Andronicus standing left and Michael standing right;holding between them a labarum. RefOC V part 1.Class VIII.(g) 535-538. Better than very fine with ususal flatness in areas, edge chip. Michael depicted with moustche and beard.<< I asked the seller what the Sear refenrece it is, and he said that it is Sear 2402. But when I check it in the Sear-book it seems incorrect, because the two stars are lacking. However, another seller have the same type of coin and he has listed it also as Sear 2402 here: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/bi...nople_mint_19_gr__2131_mm/916861/Default.aspx ----------------------------------------------- I want to ask the Byzantine experts here for help: Can you tell me what ruler(s) is/are on the first coin? I can't see the names of Andronicus II and Michael. It only says "Autokrator EC? Romans" or something like this. Can you identify the first coin with the correct Sear reference nr? Thanks for any help you can provide.
I think Sear 2402 could be correct. Sometimes the stars are present according to the Labarum page. See here: https://coins.labarum.info/en/catalog/1152?cid=7314
Should translate to: Lord Jesus Christ Saves/helps Autocrats of the Romans The emperors would be Andronikos II and Michael IX (Andronikos on the left). They werent named on the issue.
You would want to look in DOC for more accuracy. I think 2402 can also include stars. Andronicus II/Michael IX Constantinople AR Basilikon 1295 to 1320 AD Obvs: IC - XC KVRIE BOHΘE, Christ enthroned. Revs: AVTΩKPATO-PEC PωMAION, Andronicus and Michael holding labarum between them. 20mm, 1.70g. Ref: DOC 523, Sear 2402
You are better off looking at DOC as it breaks down the different types better than Sear. Michael does not have a mustache in the "star" version of Sear 2402. Its only available, in some coins, that have a pellet. Thank you and other very much. I dont want to create a new thread, and if you and the others dont mind I want your opinion regarding this trachy. I especially want the opinion of The Trachy Enjoyer as I assume you must be very deep into this. I have this coin that has annoyed me a little bit: I have concluded that it have to be: Theodorus I Comnenus-Lascaris (1208-1222) Sear 2062 - The seller also listed it as this. On obverse I can (with imagination) see an enthroned Jesus with gospel. On reverse I can clarly see a "K O" above the mappa-thing. Note that there is a star beneath the emperor. David Sear's book is not giving much information on Sear 2062. Also here is a similar coin: http://labarum.info/lbr/show.php?coin=20621 So, The Trachy Enjoyer and others who may have a strong opinion: Do you think I have identified my coin correct, or do u think it is imposible to be sure? Thanks again.
