I came across this coin while examining my collection. In his Catalogue of US and Colonial Coins, Breen calls this a repunched mintmark and says it is extremely rare. I have a feeling that if some dealer or group of dealers could market this coin, they could call it an "S over S". As it is, there appears to be no interest in this coin as a "repunched mintmark".

    The problem is,,,
"As the numismatic value of a coin increases the chances of realizing a significant premium on that coin decreases".

The coin is valuble being an eagle as is, the RPM, while interesting would not further inhance it very much if any.

Like so many of these types of coins, if there isn't a big hooplah about them, then the variety doesn't add that much to the value.
I bought a $1 gold coin that turns out to be a DDO. The only sale of one that I could find went for about 50% higher than a normal strike. (No, I didn't cherrypick it. I didn't know what I had until someone told me to check it with Breen's encyclopedia.)

    Yeh.
Specialists who look for varieties within a set LOVE the unpublished or only slightly noticed varieties.
They get real potential rarities at regular prices.
