So I have a CAPS album for modern commemorative half dollars that come with standard capsules for half dollars. Although it is large, I really like the way it looks once the coins are housed in it. Something I noticed; however, is that the capsules for the Baseball Hall of Fame halves do not completely fit the coin due to it being curved. Other capsule holders (and those that come with the half) do not fit in the CAPS album. Has anyone run into this problem and did you find a workable solution to it?
The US Mint seems to take orders for packaging from the lowest bidder and has very little if any specification. I was putting the ATB quarters in CAPS pages. I would buy the set of three from the mint, take the capsule out and put them in the CAPS page. Partway through the issue/set they changed the size of the capsules and they no longer fit in the page. I had to buy new capsules and extract the quarter from the mint capsule and put it in the new one. It was a pain, but I am done with the set and done with the US Mint. Don't count on the mint being consistent at all.
https://www.capsalbums.com/modern-commemorative-half-dollar-with-proof-album-2208 says it fits the Baseball HOF half dollar. https://www.capsalbums.com/capsule-...orative-half-dollar-type-set-with-proof-album the airtites they sell for this album are supposed to be T30 Direct fits. Caps Albums, depending on the album and pages, ONLY Take Airtite capsules, and only A, H or T type capsules, capsule rings won't help in this situation of changing the capsule to a different brand, the caps albums are designed for Airtite outer diameter only. T30 Holder Measurements Inside Diameter: 1.204" (30.6mm) Outside Diameter: 1.437 (36.49mm) Inside Depth: 0.080" (2.03mm) Outside Thickness: 0.200" (5.1mm) The clad half dollar "dome" is 0.058 inches (1.4732 mm) for the 50c clad coins, that should fit no issue on clearance. coin Diameter: 30.61 mm, Should be a tight fit and you might have to try a few capsules, maybe find that minusculely "looser" capsule, but it should fit and close. another option would be modifying the page to fit the mint capsule. final option would be to modify the capsule inner diameter to gain that 1/100th of a mm, but I'd think there should be a manufacturer variation of at least 1/100 mm between capsules and some fit looser or tighter than others,, marginally. I suppose warming the capsule up a bit might also stretch it that 1/100thmm..... but I think if you go through your others you might find once capsule/coin that fits just slightly looser, a slightly more forgiving inner diameter, and you can use that and save earning the craftsmanship badge for another day.
Thank you! I already have the album and capsules. The set is almost complete, the issue is the capsules that came with it and fit the album, do not fit the Baseball Hall of Fame, Basketball Hall of Fame, and Apollo 11 coins because of their design. The capsules aren't thick enough to encapsulate the coin while maintaining the same diameter to fit in the album. I was hoping someone had already figured out a solution to this.
just saying, all 3 of them are 1.205" by specifications, the holders inner diameter is 1.204" it's 1/1000th of an inch difference. The problem is the album is designed for the half dollar T type holders, those are 36.5mm outer diameter. it's the only one of this size of any of the other letter types, no other capsule holder is going to fit the caps album page. if you can't get lucky with a variance on the inner diameter by trying a few different holders hoping to get one with that 1/1000th of an inch extra, the alternative would be to expand the inner diameter a hair by shaving off some of the inside lip. you should also measure the coin itself to make sure it's diameter is as it should be it could be on the high side of the tolerance also. Only other option I see is to go the route of opening up the album page hole to 44.450mm / 1.750" to accept an H type ring holder, with the 26-32mm range. could probably rotozip or dremel around the inner edge of the holder and open it up by 1/1000th much easier and cleaner than trying to cut a circle bigger in the album page from 1.437" to 1.750" less costly to play with the inner edge of a couple airtites than messing up a page of the album trying to modify the page in my opinion. I don't find any alternative from other companies that fit the album holes. Ideally, Measuring the coin to be certain it's to spec diameter, then trying what airtites you have hoping for a slightly larger inner diameter is the best option over either of the other solutions. Next best thing might be trying to warm the capsule and "stretch" the ID by .001-.002" thinner from the inside and raise the wall upward in the process and trim it down again, Anything that involves modifications to the page or capsule is trial and error and a bit more detailed work than most people want to do. there isn't an off the shelf solution to this issue. You could always ask Airtite and Caps Albums in an email about this issue, I don't think it's cost effective for either of them to solve it though, it's literally 3 coins that have the problem currently. Caps would probably tell you to add a blank H Type page and put the 3 oddball sizes coins there in ring fit holders. that would solve the problem for any other oddballs that might come in the future. And yeah, after talking this through and writing all this, Probably adding an H style page for those domed coins is the best/easiest option as a solution to the problem...
