Could you please take a look. The markers are there but I am not totally convinced it is stage B as listed on VV http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/1984DDDO001.htm The last image is the die polishing/die scratches at the bottom of the right side of the bust
Boy, I never bother to look at details that are so small that I can't see them with just a low powered loop, so my opinion means nothing, but I just don't see it when I compared it to the VV site. The mint mark looks like either die wear or a plating issue, but more experienced members may have more to say.
I can't tell from your photos, but the 9 does look promising. It's probably not Stage B as VV would have probably called out the die clash. And the cracks on the columns looks to be off...but clearer pictures could help. Can you get us better photos? Maybe not quite as magnified?
Sorry guys, gonna have to re-visit this tomorrow night. My scope has stopped working and my camera is at work
I didn't think it was the suggested listing myself, but the split in the tail of the 9 hints at doubling. That said, I've seen split plating in that area in the past. And without clearer photos, it's hard to tip it one way or the other.
Relative to the known varieties the 8 as Rick notes is the key. And a well placed hit on a digit can split the plating and create weird optics. In the recent photos I’m not sure if I’m seeing a subtle notch in the tail or possibly a reflection across the arch of the device. Glare is also a bit of a factor here. That said the 8 looks normal. No lower bulge as found in known P and D varieties.
Agreed, 8 is mis-shaped but doesn't look close enough to known examples. Played with the lighting a bit more
IMO no. The 9 looks very close but the MM is different. Stage B on VV shows shift to the west. Yours shows shift to the southwest. Just MO.
No problem @expat. It's important to note that minor varieties are out there by the droves. Of course, typically not largely sought after or very valuable, but if you enjoy finding them...and getting an occasional attribution, all the power to that individual. I typically hang onto them and wait for an attribution to come along from others. As for a few of us diehards...happy to stick it out with others until they are ready to put it to rest.
It is not something I do much because acquiring US coinage here in Spain is a bit difficult at times, but now and again I choose a few at random to have a closer look at.
