My latest interest is a short set (1885-1909) of Indian Head Cents. I decided I'd like to have a matched set so you'll see that all the IHCs are the same grade. My dealer didn't have a 1902 and I already had a 1908. The 2-cent coin is an upgrade. Because there are nine coins I'm posting links rather than images. 1900 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1900-Final-txt.jpg 1901 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1901-Final-txt.jpg 1903 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1903-Final-txt.jpg 1904 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1904-Final-txt.jpg 1905 My dealer believes this coin could easily upgrade, but since I want a matched set I'll let it stay as is. http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1905-Final-txt.jpg 1906 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1906-Final-txt.jpg 1907 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1907-Final-txt.jpg 1909 http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1909-Final-txt.jpg Two Cent http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/2-1865-Final-txt.jpg
WOW! Looks like you got some rather nice coins at the show! So how far along are you with the Indian Cents?
I've got the ones posted above plus the 1908. I also have a 1859 and 1862 for my type set. And I have many of the keys/semi keys. Will I go for a full set? Right now that's not the plan.
Okay - I will say a very nice run of IHC's. Very sweet matched set - but the 1909 is the typical weak strike that you see. It might be the picture or the slight wood grain effect but to me it is slightly not the same quality as the rest. BUT I would not kick it out of my collection and I am not knocking it. Just to me the lower hair, feathers and ribbon really stand out in the rest, but on the 1909 it looks weak. Still it is a very sweet run of IHC's. Nice two center also.
Is it just the photo, mark on the coin, or is there a repunch of the "1" showing in the date? Nothing I have lists it, so probably one of the first 2 choices, but sure looks like the base and top to the north. Nice set! Jim
Nope, no 1877 in MS-65 RB (okay, maybe if I hit the lottery). My 1877 is a XF-45 and that's what I'll stick with. Here's my 1909-S And to give equal time to it's older brother, here's my 1908-S: I keep getting fooled by my images. I keep seeing doubling!!! But it's not real. I believe it's my lighting that does it.
Thanks for showing off your S mints, Kanga. Love 'em!!! I once owned an 09-S NGC MS-64 BN. Man, I loved that coin! Bought it when the ANA was here in Chicago and sold it right around when I bought my house. ::::sigh:::: memoreis!
Beautiful IHC's Kanga, and that 2 center is especially nice (Plus an additional 856 points). Well Done :thumb:
Thanks for all the appreciation. As I've said in the past, I don't want to re-buy a coin if I can help it. In other words, I try to put myself in a position so that I don't have to upgrade later. It takes a bit of planning. You'll note that the IHCs are for a "short set". No way could I keep buying the earlier IHCs at that grade level. In this case, the 2-cent IS an upgrade. Now the part that hurts. I will try to sell the previous 1865 2-cent coin. Subjectively I want to keep it; objectively it has to go. Thanks again for all the kind comments.
Hi ! Kanga, I'm not sure I understand how you get these coins. Do you pick them up at coin shows already slabbed ? Do you prefer the slabbed coins from PCGS, or is it just a fluke that you found all MS65's RB from that particular supplier ? They are all great looking coins, although the first 1909 I think might be over-graded as a MS65. You did a good job of getting these IHC grouped. Must have cost you a mint. (Pun intended)
