I’ve never done one of these GTGs but they look fun so I wanted to do one. Can you GTG on this 1938-D Buffalo Nickel in an NGC holder? I apologize for the scratches on the holder on the reverse but those are on the slab not the coin.
Everything appears to be in the right places. Provided nothing funny's going on in those off-color pics I can't see, I think I can MS66 that handsome bison. Nice one.
These are hard to photo. Any chance you can get a clearer photo. Stabilize your camera, Based on your photo it is a good strike. Yet, we can't see much for details.
Any suggestions on taking better photos with an Iphone XS? I even posted a thread earlier asking for advice on taking good photos of coins. :/
It's all about light and being able to stabilize your tool. There really isn't many tricks when it is a phone that does it all for you. You are just gonna have to play with the positioning, I can't tell whether to grade AU58 or MS66. It is up to you to give us that in hand look. Remember it is easy to hide defects, but it is also just as easy to make it look worse than it is. You as the photographer are the artist.
I tried the best I could . I'll try again and see if I can get a better photo. But I can tell you for sure that I did not try to hide any defects or anything like that. Usually people who try to hide defects do so intentionally no?
There was a great photo tutorial here somewhere, about taking cell pics. Not sure where it is, but I've followed it, and my pics come out pretty well. I use a full can of something (beer) to rest the phone on, camera down, screen up. You've obviously already set the coin up on a nice piece of royal blue velvet, so, coin set up, camera pointing lens down while RESTING on something, that's important, because it stabilizes the pic. I have 3 lighting sources, natural, i set up by an open window, then i set up a lamp opposite the open window, then i set up a spotlight (led) a few feet away. Overkill, i know, but sometimes, they come out nicely. When I'm ready to tap the screen to take the pic, i press firmly down on the sides of the phone with my left hand to stabilize, and tap the button with my right and viola! Clean coin pic! That's about how they spelled it out on the other thread. They may have been using a soda pop can though. (I rate that coin as "gorgeous", because i have no right trying to grade anything for real, but i love that coin. "G", lol.)
I'll guess 65 based on that older holder. The D looks off, but not enough detail in the photo to guess.
66 as most of these Late buffs are, older holder?its not in a fatty and im not going to guess D/D without better pictures.
Am going all the way to 67 on this...just a hunch/speculation that under those holder scratches and in more/better lighting, in hand, etc...is a more exceptional coin.
