Please GTG of the 1982-P Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or Not FS, and the + designation.

As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll. FYI, the lines in the upper reverse field are die polish.

My gut says that hit under column 3 kept it from FS but screw my gut.

    66 FS

    Nice Jefferson Nickel!

    Can I ask a question?

What do you use to take your photos?

I'd like to take photos of my coins like that.

my guess is MS-66 Not full steps (4 1/2) unless we count Felix Schlag's initial in obverse! Nice one

I went 66 not FS. That contact on the 4th step bridged the 5th step.

Boy, talk about a lousy die polishing job. They wanted to keep that reverse die busy, didn’t they?

I could go for MS66 Full. I see the break on the 5th step but it’s just a tiny hit on otherwise strong lines from end to end. I don’t know how they think their market would take that. Overall, nice coin. My ‘82 is better, but... ;)

I went a 65 and not FS. To me the steps look to be on an angle which I though was interesting.

MS 66 no FS. If it had been graded by PCGS I think it would have got the FS designation, but NGC are a bit stricter on it IMO.
    Beautiful coin

A hint on the steps thing that Lehigh has mentioned at least once. Count the number of steps that you can see ( in this case 4 and 1/3) then add one. So 5 1/3 gets to 5 FS. The 1/3 is the 6th step at the bottom, not full so does not count as a 6th step on this coin.

Why add one? I am not sure but I think it is the very top step that some have pointed out is the floor and where the columns of the entry of the building rests; but that is the top step technically...

I don't claim to be a grader, but wouldn't the late stage die deterioration keep it from getting a high MS grade? Just my thoughts.
