It's a problem coin as everyone had said. Actually you said it first Randy. My question to you is, do you have a price point in mind that it's worth owning the problem? If yes, then make that offer (maybe even 20% less than that) to the seller. They already opened the negotiating door with their lower offer to you.

You own the Bar Token because you had to have it, regardless of the tooling. Same scenario in my mind. This is a beautiful coin. Shame it was worked on.

Yes, that is a problem coin @Randy Abercrombie. It's been polished to within an inch of it's life.

Here's an example of the same coin which I messed up with a purchase. Yes, I too goof now and then. At certain angles, this coin had some hairlines showing. This was from 25 to 30 years ago.



Here's another one. They would not grade this piece.



And yet they put a VF-30 grade on this one. Go figure.

I have to agree with kanga. A coin of that magnitude would definitely have to be slabbed and graded before I would even consider it.

The rays can be mesmerizing and get you into the same trouble as a 6’, busty, long haired blonde.

 

What leads you to think it is fake? I am always wary of potential fakes when I am looking. This one didn't scream fake to me. Just very, very cleaned.

 

LOL.... Same direction that I was going when I responded to @masterswimmer.... When I was a young man at around one or two am on Friday/Saturday nights, they all looked like 6' busty blondes! There was more than once that I wish my buddies had hauled me back in!

For $400 you could buy several other coins you might need, and like. One thing to consider though, haven't the majority of older coins have been cleaned at one point or another years ago? Pick and choose dilemma - go with your "gut" and if you truly want and need it for your own desires, have at it. No matter what any of us think, you are the one who will be owning the coin. Trust your own instincts along with the advice from this forum. That's the beauty of this country, you and you alone have the ability of decide one way or the other after weighing input from everyone else.

 

It's what I call a "Yea But" coin. Run for the hills, you will hate it if you buy it.

 

I personally wouldn't want it due to its overall appearance, cleaned or not. The areas on the obverse are just too glaring to be acceptable, but that's just me.

 

I have just about given up trying to judge coins' appearances by photos since lighting and photography equipment has so much of an effect on the product which has nothing to do wit the coin. The top 2 are the same coin. The top one is a PICTURE and the one below it is a PHOTOGRAPH. If there weren't markers identifying the coin, it would be easy to think they are two different coins.



This is my discovery of the same variety. But at best, all I can do is take a good PICTURE.

All this is just to point out that the harsh tooling "might" also be a reflection of the background if you're shooting a highly reflective surface. It's hard to know without close examination in hand by a knowledgeable numismatist with the proper equipment to examine the coin. The problem with slabs is that they hinder such a process.

Definitely polished possibly whizzed. On the obverse right field it looks like something was buffed out. That coin is only a pocket piece now. To bad it was a nice coin before someone messed with it.
