Is this intentional or a product of the mint process?

I have had this 1942 dime all my life. I often wondered if it was intentional damage or something that may have happened at the mint. Both rims are very smooth and uniform which makes me think that it couldn't have been done intentionally. Comments please.

Is it bigger or smaller than a normal dime?

 

it appears to of been done intentionally looks like it could fit in one of those good luck things.

 

My first thought is that it was probably encased, i may be wrong but that's what popped into my head.

It is 18.3 X 18.3 mm and weighs 2.35 g

 

Probably will never know. My grandmothers uncle used to grind off silver from coins and keep it. Genius really.

That's why they put the reeds on silver coins. If someone removed some silver it would be obvious.

 

It’s intentional. There’s no chance that a die would do that at the mint not to mention that it would then circulate for years to get worn down

 

Definitely post mint something or other... not sure, possibly it was encased in jewelry or something else that required it to be altered to fit into properly, interesting.

Most likely PMD. What does the edge look like?

 

The edge is rounded not a square shoulder at all.

 

It is 100% PMD. How? Why? Only the person who did it knows.

 

I marked it in my collection as "Intentional PMD".

I think its a coin I would keep! You have had it all ur life! Why not! Could be a lucky dime!

 

Looks allot like the overhead crane dimes we used to do in the papermill. Train tracks turn a dime into quarter size?

 

Here is a "train track" penny I produced in the 1950's. Big difference I think.

 

Used to do RR track coins myself. Sometimes I'd be able to locate my efforts and sometimes they eluded me. Granny was always warning me about getting hit by a train or causing a wreck.
