What are all of your thoughts on natural gold toning on coins like nickels? I saw a beautiful gold toned buffalo nickel the other week and thought it was a hit or miss. I can see it sometimes commanding a premium, but not for everyone. A very niche kind of coin. Either people like it or don't. No in between. Thoughts?
Without seeing an example it is hard to say. Some of the light golden toning on the buff nickels with the frosty devices can be very nice. When it gets to be a real darker yellow then I do not like it as much. Just a personal preference.
What do you think? You said the one you saw was 'was a hit or miss.', which was it for you? Did you like it or not? For me it's a case by case decision like with any coin regardless of toning or other distinguishing factors beyond the technical. Every coin is unique even within a given species like 'gold toned nickels'.
I dig it. I don't think I'd pay a premium for it, but I definitely dig an overall golden cast on a silver or clad coin. I've got a few Jefferson proofs in my set that are toned golden -- they definitely pop out in a good way.
Well, it depends on if the coin has a beautiful shine as well as the gold toning. I just like to hear the thoughts from you all mainly because if the majority doesn't favor gold toning, I may be stuck with it for a little longer time..
Call me old fashioned, but I will take a blast white coin over a toned one any day, especially if it's a proof. To me, a toned proof is like a beautiful painting with a layer of dust over it. Just my opinion.
For some reason, the 73S Ikes love to tone a golden color. I have 3 that look like this, but this is my favorite. Both my 78s have a really nice golden tone to them. I have a 76 that also has a nice gold/blue toning. I prefer a nice blast white IKE over anything else, but sometimes a nice even golden IKE looks fantastic.
seemingly you prefer to purchase first and ask questions afterward. I think that you have these steps backward. If you are an analyst as the title under your name states, what are you analyzing? What is your area of analytical expertise? Just curious...
So where's the golden pics? I don't see any yet..... Nice stuff Joe.....Looks kinda "white" to me though.
I've seen this kind o' toning on an Ike. Where the heck is that craigs list thread? You know, the 22K Ikes that were sellin'......
'I like Ikes' of all tones, blast whites, some golden, frosty one but my favorites are when they get blue. I only collect the silver Ikes and have noticed it's the silver 73-S, and 76-S that most often turns up golden. But a greater variety of the CuNi Ikes get yellowish looking to my distaste.
Here is my golden/blue Ike. Depending on my mood and what time a day it is....sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't. I bought it because it looked better in pictures than in hand. You can't really see the blue in my pics but all the dark areas on the coin are bluish.
