My making the grade book has the caveat, (for a 65) luster and strike are attractive and of high quality FOR THE DATE.

A few small and scattered contact marks, one or two small patche of hairline scratches visible under magnification, light scuff marks may be detectable on design high points,

How high of magnification did you look at it with? If there are none, and a 65 has one or two small patches....

First let me say very nice coins....I am asking this question as a novice trying to learn more about grading, I think I see wear marks or rub marks on the eagles claws and on the tips of it head and wings...also some on the cap and hair on liberty on the obverse(although it looks like those could be the lighting) wouldn't that lower the grade to high AU? or are these minor rubs acceptable on a coin of this type? thanks

I suspect the bottom coin has been lightly cleaned...(from the pics at least) I have handled quite a few gem plus capped bust halves... I just don't like the surfaces. The top one is nice :)

Don't get me wrong. I am not an expert, and I hope you have hit the jackpot. Just my limited experience talking thinking there is something wrong looking with the arrowheads and the shield.

When did you send the coin to NGC?

Shouldn't you ask for grading opinions on coins, before you send them in? Just to be safer, I mean, you ask us for our opinions, after you send the coins in, but there could be something you missed on the coin, or you might not know how to grade the coin, other than you think it looks nice, and who knows, maybe your coins come back BB for altered services, or even being fake. Just to save yourself some money, unless you really know your series well, I would ask us for our opinions, before the coin is actually sent in for grading.

Now onto the coins, I really do like the first one, I'm not familiar with this series, so I wouldn't want to give a definite answer on the grade, but my guess would be in the 65-66 range.

Now for the second coin, it does strike me as odd, but I doubt it is a fake. If it doesn't come back BB I would say maybe a 63.

One more thing, you said that you weighed the coins right? Then you stated that they were real. Weighing the coins is just one step to determining them being authentic, you have to know your series, not just weigh them and say "OH THEY ARE REAL!"

The denticles on the bottom coin bother me....

I agree and have refrained from posting. I think the top coin probably has cabinet or friction rub on the high points. Which tpgs will let slide. The second coin is dipped or something, but I have seen some slabbed that look like that. While both coins are very nice I would expect the first coin to go 63 and maybe 64. The second coin should be net graded. Just my humble opinion on two nice coins.

The second coin certainly looks genuine to me. However, if the color portrayed in the image sis accurate, I believe it will body-bag for artificial color.

The first coin looks quite a bit nicer - the images look as if they are from an auction listing.

Edited to add: Even if I'm wrong and the second coin grades, I don't think it will be anywhere near MS65. I'd guess between AU58 and MS62. It does not look like an original "gemmy' coin.

Since he already owns the coins, I see no reason for him to ask for grading opinions based on images, before he submits them. He is probably as likely to get bad/inaccurate feedback as he is good/accurate feedback.

Since Stella is back - what happened with the grades on these coins? Very curious.

Just a precautionary measure. Before I sent any coins in for grading, I would ask for some opinions here first. (No matter how confident I am in my grading abilities) I would post good pics here, and just hope for the best, that the people here have the same opinion I do.

And yes, I'd be interested to see what the grades are of those coins, as Mark stated.
