I just picked up a great book from the recent Heritage rare book sale. I bought it for the engravings, but the reading seems interesting as well. Description Evert A. Duyckinck. Portrait Gallery of Eminent Men and Women of Europe and America. New York: Johnson, Wilson and Company, 1873. Two quarto volumes. Illustrated. Bound in publisher's full morocco. Very good. More Information: Two quarto volumes. 640; 638 pages. Illustrated with engravings. Lots of people on US coinage in this book.
very nice! I enjoy old books as well In fact, hopefully this winter I'm going to get mine repaired (a book on the Columbian's World Fair)
They were both Directors of the Mint. David M. Fox I believe was in about 1865 and Frank Leech was somewhere in about 1908. Both very influential Mint Directors. I too collect First Editions. I have an original Crosby's "Early Coins in America" and the TAMS reprint of 1965. My library is fairly extensive and somewhat varied in subject matter, but the bulk is Numismatic Literature.
Now that's way up there on my cool scale. I don't guess Brenner would be in there? The book in probably too old. Please give us some names. Maybe Eckfeldt? How about Doug
There are introductory references to notable collectors such as Stickney, Woodward,Betts, Cogan and more for providing specimens to assist Crosby in that writing.
Oh. The people featured in the book are all politicians, military officials, poets, writers, and other famous people.
Yes. Not being familiar with the Portraitist, I searched a Bio for him. Very interesting lineage. The family line notes early 1600 settlement on Long Island. Everet Augustus died in 1878, shortly after that publication. Great book!! and I bet teriffic readings. Sweet! I'm curious if that was his last works.
Hey, beautiful book. The spines look like they are in nice condition. Congrats on the pick up. I love old books.
Your looking at it! LOL. I would love to collect both rare coins and rare books but I don't have the money for both and rare books are even more expensive than rare coins. What I would like to do is build a numismatic library of rare books and auction catalogs.
edited I wasn't aware of your book before I came across this thread, but let me congratulate you on a cool purchase. I did find one piece of numismatic-related material in the Manuscripts auction that took place on the same day: http://historical.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=6031&Lot_No=35116 ...which I now own.
Hopefully, this thread will continue. I'll try to take some pictures of some of my (non-Red Book) items and show them. What do you think? Or should we start a new thread? I don't want to hijack this one. Lemme know.
Normally he could COUNT on it ! But he's putting me in some pretty good company so maybe, maybe I'll forgive him just this once
Doug? In a book? Nah, he doesn't even own a book, just a large library of 'mod keys' that enable him to delete all books.
