So here I am, bumbling around on the ebay, and I came across a 1928A Silver Certificate Blue Seal graded by CGA as an CH UNC 64. I ended up paying $72.99 with free shipping. My 3 books I use as reference (Blackbook Price Guide 2010, Red Book Guide 2nd Ed., and Small Size Paper Money Guide 9th Ed.) list the note, in that condition as being worth $125, $60, and $85 in the order I listed the books. Now I need justification for my purchase, and a calm, soothing, reassuring voice to tell me I got a good deal.

First off, All value guides have different price listings, I dont care what you
Have 3 books you will have 3 different prices, But books i think are alot
Less reliable especially in this market!!

If you do any kind of paper at all the best price guide is the "Currency Green
Sheet" Newsletter published once a month, With the current price listings
Unfortunatley the note you purchased is going for Approx. $52, But price
Isnt everything, If it makes you feel good, Thats the important thing!!

as mpcusa mentioned, price guides only tell a story 2 years too late lol However, you got a nice notes, and for a ncie price. The currency green sheets is also just another guide, and notes rarely sell for those prices in the retial market.

I thunk you done good :D

    Well what info you have been given so far is good! One thing I would like to mention to you if you do not mind is this;

When you start a collection no matter what it is, you develop a goal.
Collecting is a niche hobby and one that involves supply and demand the basis of all exchange.
When you set your goal (a specific direction) for the collection you should focus on a few things. Whatever the goals are you will need to define them in your own mind. If you are looking for others to confirm your purchases for you then you are not being true to your collecting goals.
When I began I asked a similar question of my peers here along with images so they could have an idea of what it was that I was after. When it was all said and done, I ended up making the decision and have never looked back.

I have paid more for some notes than others and have gotten good and not so good deals...but the point of the addition was to satisfy the end goal, no matter what the cost! Your basic supply and demand.

So whatever it is that you want to collect, find out about it, research auction archives, build a pricing guide you can live with and then start working toward the goal.
Forget the investment side of it....there will always be someone out there with unlimited resources who will put together a better collection than what you have...that is just Murphy's Law..LOL

So go for the very best you can afford and study before you buy..get comfortable knowing what you are seeking and then you will not question yourself.

Ohh and one last thought, while there are some legit dealers on Flea-Bay,
I would advise you to seek out other sources as well. I have a hard time trusting most E-Bay sellers. Now I know quite a few Dealers who use ebay and if I am looking for something I always call them and develop that connection first. Just a "warning..warning.. Will Robinson"
    Good luck!!

That's why I enjoy this forum, always more info than I bargained for. Thanks again, I subscribed to the Green Sheet. I really started collecting this January, and I don't intend on my collection just being something nice to look at. It is one of many parts of securing my future. I'm a spring chicken as my father says, so I hopefully still have plenty of time to grow my investment. Thanks again for the info and feedback, sometimes I have to talk myself into or out of a purchase, but I think I'll be happy with this one.

Also, I noticed mpcusa mentioned something about "this market". Is this a buyers or sellers market for paper currency?

You may be referring to my post....

Just wanted you to know my remaks are not unfounded. I have been where you are now and know how you feel about your collection.
Just remember these words; "Always buy the best you can afford"

Good luck with the collection..it is yours after all.

depends on who you ask! alot of folks are saying the market is soft right now, menaing selling prices are lower then a few months ago. In this respect, it is a buyer market. But there are some notes still selling for record prices - so in that respect its a sellers market.

IMHO however, most of the market is in a bit of a slump. Will it go down further as the economy bottoms out -- that is anyones guess!

The market is definitely in a down turn!! I can tell you
From personal experience on my recent sales
If you don,t believe me take a look at the "Green
Sheet" Now and go back about 6 months.

You will see what iam talking about the paper money
Market is down about 25% atleast maybe a little
More, If your buyer now is a great time for you
If a seller hold on for a rocky ride!!
