Received this in change yesterday. Run size was only 640K and condition is AU with no hard creases and nice corners and centering. There are a couple light bends but overall it looks crisp. Normally I don't get too excited by stars but I think this one will get a sleave and spot in my collection. Sorry about the blurry photos as my phone will sometimes do that. According to http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/stars/lookup.php it's even better - run size is 320k but there are 2 runs with 3,520,000 total printed (I guess 1st run had 3,200,000 printed). I tried to understand it before but didn't really get it :desk:. We do care about run size - the smaller the better - but at the same time there might be several runs so total number of printed notes are much bigger. Then what's the point in caring of run size? Does anybody collect notes from all runs of a series (like collecting of all district/block combinations)? Is there a market for this classification by runs? Thank you.
Yes, some people do collect by run size when it comes to stars. This run was from 03200000 to 03840000 in March of 09.
I believe you ment something else but not "collect by run size". I cannot imagine somebody would put together collection like this: $1 from run with size of 32000 $1 from run with size of 64000 ... $1 from run with size of 320000 ... $1 from run with size of 3200000 But you never know... Does somebody here do something like that?
yes, in fact alot of folks do! Myself, i am with you in that i look at the total notes printed. But even with that thinking, if i find a note from a print run of 320,000 ... i am not spending it
Give me 3 names who do that then I'll believe. I have a $20 gold certificate as a part of my type collection but I cannot say that I collect gold certificates. The same with runs - everyone would be happy to get a note from a short run but who collects notes by run size? The person should ignore notes if they are from runs of the same size. Now if you'd say "collect by runs" then I would be with you - in this case of $1 2006 J star note you would need a note from each of 2 runs.
Yes - I meant that if a note from a specifically small run turns up there are many collectors (many more than three) that would keep it. If a note from a large run turns up they are not likely to keep it unless (it's really old) they collect that reserve and they do not already have one from that series in better condition. Short run stars are collectible by quite a few collectors I know both here and on another site I frequent. are you saying no, then saying yes? As i said, i do not collect by print run, i look at the total number printed. But there ARE folks who collect by print run. It is their choice to collect in that manner, and NOT up to us to flame them for collecting that way. They collect however makes them happy, and you and i do the same - there is NO wrong way. in your example, if a note had 2 print runs with varying size, a print run collector might collect 1 note from each print run. Most times, a print run is plentifull, and easy to obtain. However, there are print run sizes like those mentioned in this thread. In those cases, print run rollectors will go nuts trying to find them, where i wouldnt if there were still 30,000,000 notes printed for that district.
Do not just say Yes or No - it's confusing. Explain what do you mean. USS656 said "some people do collect by run size" when he meant "collect samples of SHORT runs". I'm disputing this definition as it was presented here. Replies were "yes, people do that" but then you all described "collect samples of short runs" but still insist on correct original "collect by run size". We are SELECTING or DISCRIMINATING by run size because we specifically want notes from short runs. That's different from "collecting by run size" what asumes collecting samples from runs of all different sizes (and ignore notes from short runs if you already have a note from a run of the same size - otherwise it wouldn't be "collecting by run size") what I think would be strange. And then you would again say "yes, people do that" and describe "collect samples of short runs"... Ok, at least I've got what did you mean.
There is a member on this site that is putting together a 1976 collection of 2s from each reserve and each print run. That's a big undertaking but he is gettint there.
That's understandable I bet he doesn't ignore notes from some runs because he already has a note from another run with the same size what would be "collecting by run size".
there are all types of collectors collecting different things in different ways. I dont think any of us can say 'nobody' does this or that - its always plausable that somebody might
