Dont know what to do with this set, should I not open it and put it away or send it in to NGC for grading or resale it on ebay now to double my money??:goofer::rolling: I am confused on this one.
For me, I'd enjoy having it. I tried to order one and didn't get in. But you have to look at your own goals. If you want to profit, sell on eBay now. If you just like to have it, keep it. Too early to tell if grading by NGC is worth it.
I got two and just sold one to pay for the other plus make a few bucks... im taking delivery of mine Thursday and I will open them up and pick the one I like the most and mail the other one off to the buyer. I prob wont get them graded unless I am sure they will go pf70.... so I prob wont get them graded.
Should* be designed with a push side so that if you apply pressure the other side will lift and be easy to remove *-Nothing is ever as it should be so I would take a knife and just pop it out if thats not built it.
At the lower ( 6 o clock ) position is a recess in each coin slot. Simply push the coin down in this area and it will flip up at 12 o clock and you can then pull it out. That said I just love this arrangement and packaging. The mint did a stellar job and I would leave it "ORIGINAL" rather than allow the grading companies to fiddle with it.
One thing to consider is "the original packaging." I seem to remember reading someplace that third party grading companies are not going to grade these coins and then repackage them as a set. They'll be graded as individually coins. If true, you'll lose the limited edition that the set offers. Can anyone shed any light on this? I was also considering having them graded.
I believe PCGS (= HYPE) has in the past put special "labels" on sealed sets. For example the Buffalo Silver $ coin and currency set has a special label. Presumably one sends the whole kit to them and they disassemble and cover the coin with their plastic "value" drape and label. In the case of the Chronicles set it is quite easy to simply replace the coins since they jump out. My guess is that the TPGs would not do anything special in this case. Perhaps if they did, it would only be for mint sealed boxes.
my order is two days away from me. I can't wait to see if the set is cracked up to what it is said to be. All this hype and clamor has got me a bit disoriented about why it is so important to have this set. Is it just because of the low mintage or the Lincoln proof dollar or the cents ? The mint and sliver proof sets were really nice. So what's the big attraction? Please get me back on track!
You want it because everyone else is paying 160$ for them on ebay.... so it must be good right!? Option 2: Great packaging and presentation for beautiful coins! (and everyone else wants them so bad they are paying 160$ on ebaY!!!!)
"jump out" what's that mean? Do the capsules open and re-close easily so that you could swap other proof coins into the capsules/packaging? Or are these the sealed capsules? Have you tried to remove your LN6 coins from their capsules already?
The cents are encased in oversize Airtite capsules; these have an inner chamber which is an exact fit for each cent. The Dollar is in the standard mint capsule. The capsules themselves come out of the back cover very easily by just applying pressure to the bottom rim sector. The coins themselves can also be removed quite easily if one chooses to. I WILL DEFINITELY NOT REMOVE THE COINS. I WANT MY SET TO REMAIN ORIGINAL AND IN THE ORIGINAL MINT PACKAGING. I PLAN TO KEEP MY ONE SET.
Yeah I have a set and know the type of capsules. was just curious based on your other comment if you'd tried to open the capsule to extract the coins. I wasn't sure if these were sealed capsules or ones you could remove the coins and replace with others, say if you sent coins out for grading but kept the packaging and swapped in other Proofs from the many other Proof products that make up the LN6. Thanks.
Since I only got the one set, I plan on just keeping it original. I wish I had been able to get another, which I would have sold on ebay to cover the cost of the first. Since all the coins are available sepparately, I think it's really the packaging (the 'set') that is valuable so having them graded by breaking apart the set doesn't appeal to me. If I want some graded, I'll send in the individual coins obtained sepparately.
Open it and enjoy I got mine today it's very nice. They're really not sealed anyway once you open the cardboard box it's in a white slip cover.
cphine: Even if you could swap coins from another set? I mean what if you thought your LN6 coins would grade higher than any others you'd get from other products? Just playing the other side of the inquiry here, I'm not opening my coins from capsules, but I got two sets and will try to unload one soon.
Just FYI, I also ordered a Braille set. This is sealed in a plastic shrink wrap. I have not opened mine - don't plan to. But this is actually a very nice folder with readable Braille. I did check the coin. The reverse is CLEAN under a 5X loupe and 10X mag. So I think this may be a high grade coin. I presume they could have shrink wrapped the LCC too. I'm just very taken up with the Address in original Lincoln penmanship.
Krispy, In rereading the posts, you may be correct. If the individual capsules can be removed and reinserted with no damage to the overall packaging, then I ya, I suppose I would. Since I haven't actually seen one in person yet, I assumed that in order to open the package it would have to be damaged. If that's not the case, whole new ballgame.
I have read a number of comments on the Internet about people who have bought these sets and have decided to keep at least one set for their own collection instead of flipping them. Me thinks this could become an interesting collectible down the road. Just a thought.
