I apologize if I'm wasting time... but I haven't been able to find this coin in many internet searches.

This coin is a 1985 D Kennedy Half Dollar in packaging that seems to claim it's a U.S. Mint Product. It's a bit hard to see in the pictures, but the years 1960 and 1985 are stamped into the coin on the left and right side of kennedy's head, respectively.

I know it's probably not worth much... but want to make sure.

    Thanks,
    Matt

p.s. I apologize for the pictures in advance... I know they're not too good, but they're the best I could do :)

Howdy image - Welcome to the Forum !!

It's not a US Mint product, it was produced by a private mint. They take a genuine hald dollar, gold plate it, stamp the other date on it and sell them to the public as collectibles.

You can read more about these in this thread - Click Here

Those sneaky buggers.... now that I read it more carefully, they used the verbiage of "has been issued by the United States Mint" and "is hereby authenticated as a special anniversary commemorative" but the two sentences aren't actually linked in any way :)

I guess I'll probably take it out of the packaging and use it as a poker card guard to protect my hold cards (so the dealer doesn't take em)

    Thanks for your quick reply,
    Matt

image-thanks for posting this coin with the original packaging!! The thread that GDJMSP posted a link too ended rather badly with a couple guys getting frustrated with trying to figure out the "real" meaning of the dates stamped on the coin. Your photos settle the dispute. I would guess that the coin is worth significantly more with the packaging than without. nice find, I'd estimate its value between $5 and $10 (to a collector of Kennedy memoriabilia). As for numismatic value... it has none, coin collectors consider the counterstamping and plating as damage.

    Dang, I have one too!

Hello there! Rune Whisperer of Chattaroy here, I've been searching the web for info on the coin you have in your possession, as I have one too. It's not in a case, but it is exactly like your coin in every way, save for the indented double dates. Looks like the dye struck the coin really hard. Just telling you that I have one of these coins, and when you get information on yours, I'd like to know too! Thanks!
