I guess I don't collect them because I can't read them. In all seriousness though, I do like the look of most ancients, but just never got around to purchasing any. My local coin shops don't deal in them. But, I have been snooping around Vcoins for a while and just might take the plunge eventually.

It's nicely mounted and framed, and hanging on the wall next to me.
Taking it apart would be a major chore.
I'll have to think about that.
    The diameter is approximately 16mm.

  4. I can't vote...I do collect them! Not to the levels of some people on here (I'm looking at you Ardatirion! ;) SA/SM and Stainless have me beat in the field, as well as several others who have not posted in this thread. )

I'm new to ALL coin collecting, only starting in May of 2008. Still plenty to learn, and I know I will never know everything about any subject. I'm willing to accept that.

I don't know hardly anything about them and I am a little concerned about fakes, but I would rather risk getting some of those then missing out on the field entirely. There are people who post, both here and on FORVM, and I'm blown away by what they know. I started collecting coins and currency because of my love of history, but dang, I know nothing at all compared to some of these people!

I saw some ancient Greek coins in silver and gold at CoinFest. I...find it hard to fathom that they are not in musuems next to scuptures and murals as small pieces of art!!

To those who say they are not round, have you ever seen a US or other modern coin that was broadstuck? Or even multiple-stuck? How about a clipped planchet? None of them are round either, and they weren't even made one at a time, by hand! And yet, they usually cost more...

Here's a washed out pic of my newest Ancient, already been posted but here it is anyway.

My reason: I haven't finished acquiring all the U.S. coins I want to yet. And probably never will. With unlimited funds and time, I would probably dabble in ancients. The same goes for world coins -- I bring a couple new ones back every time I go to Europe.

But it all comes back to trying to maintain focus: Walkers and Buffalos aggravate me sufficiently all by themselves.:thumb:

I wonder what us coins would look like if they were made with the same materials used to make the ancients

You didn't offer a choice that said, "I collect a lot of other kinds of coins and adding ancients to the mix is simply too much time, money, and education that I'm not willing to expend right now --- maybe later."

So, what your saying is that they would improve their look?

    Yes :p

Modern coinage today, sucks, as compared to that of the good ole' days... Boy o Boy do I love my morgans and gold indians

I can't agree with the morgans...but i do have to agree with the Indians. I also fancy the Bust types too. But even those couldn't beat something like:

    Ardatarion,
I don't collect ancients because I really don't think I could remember all the required info about them in order not to get scammed. I would always mis attribute stuff, and I don't know all that much about history. I am always impressed with them, but I wouldn't be able to set aside my Canadian sets in order to put together another set of coins.

mis attribute? Oh..you mean that thing I used to do? :D

Really, there is a lot to learn, but I'll bet you didn't become so great with your Canadian coin overnight like you are now. I've been at it for nearly a year and a half and still am an amatur at best.

Your speaking from a US collector standpoint though. most ancient coin collectors know what I just posted is. You are right, more people would know what a morgan is, but morgans are more common. Plus, there uglier :p.

    stainless

PS: At least use the Peace Dollar dude. You honestly think morgans have a chance? :D
