I've been collecting large cents for a long time. For $30.00 it's not bad but, the corrosion on the surface is a problem. This is a coin I would pass on. It's not so much for the price but the corrosion is a killer. For not a lot more you could get one that is corrosion free. The 1828 in terms of actual wear it would grade almost VF.
Do what YOU think you want to do...you'll be more satisfied in long run. If it were my decision based on photos, I'd save up and take my time for a better one, I think for not too much more if patient.
The "Red Book" is not quite worthless for pricing, but it isn't very good in most cases. Much better would be e-bay sold prices.
I'm in agreement with most here. Pretty rough and a little high priced but not ridiculous. I'd call it "not bad" but not good.
When I now look at a coin I just know at first glance if it's one I want to own. I've learned not to have to make myself decide to like it.
Where can I get pure acetone? I wouldn't want to use my wife's nail polish remover. Can you get it at a drug store? I've never used it before. How long a time do you dip it?
After reading the comments here, I think I'm going to pass on this one. Thanks to all. I don't know a whole lot about large cents. That's why I'm kinda shopping for one.
I get ours at Walgreens, Ace Hardware, Home Depot. Thing is, none of it is as the label says, "100% Pure Acetone." There's a thread or two in the archives where we discuss that. It's got some additive to induce quick vomiting if you take a swig of it. But just look for the "100% Pure," and it's good enough, it's the one we all use.
I'm attaching a picture of a 1827 large cent from my collection. It's graded AU55. I know grade is much higher than the one posted but, look closely at the fields on the obverse and reverse. No matter the grade you need to look for coins with surfaces like I posted in the pictures. For around $50 to $75 you should be able to find a 1828 in fine or a little better with surfaces on the coin like mine. If you buy the one you posted you will regret spending money on it.
hey manny9655 you went thru the trouble of posting it here, because you like it, right? go for it. i think thats a good price. you wont go wrong. good luck man
