I never heard of this until I was on this site, so I checked my sets that I bought on Ebay and at a local flea market. I think I have a proof set with a dime that has no mint mark. I just have determine if it is legite since I recently read that the 1970 mint marks were put on by hand!!! I will post a picture when I am sure, I think I will send to NGC for verification.:desk:
The mintmarks were put on the die by hand, not on the coin. If you have a 1970 proof set with no mintmark on the dime, it's legit. Congrats.
If you are right, I am thinking that was a major score! Congrats! Post some pics so we can properly congradulate you
okay, sure check to see if it is ligit. However, you mention that they were put on by hand? I think not, do you think that they use super glue? The die was punched by hand with the mintmark, not the coin. if not there and in the proof set, then it is probably good. okay, all, did I control myself? and, I can't believe than no one else commented. sorry-- I missed borgovan's posting.
You may have a fantastic find. 70 proof no-s dimes are high price, high demand items. Looking forward to your pics. I would certainly consider sending it to PCGS or NGC for slabbing.
Don't take this wrong but the "S" is not on the reverse of course. Don't take this wrong but the "S" is not on the reverse of course. The "S" or lack of is on (or not on) the obverse.
And this may seem silly, but make sure we are talking about a PROOF set and not a MINT set. If it is truly a no S proof then CONGRATULATIONS!
It's a rare coin, not really in demand though, prices have been falling, when it's in auction, half the time it didn't sell even though the reserve is reasonable.
What I would like to know is do you remember where you got that set? If at the flea market, you may want to go back to that same place and look for more.
What do you mean control yourself. Is this a reference to a new certain person acting crazy defensive against any hint of critique? You are usually quite nice Frank, IMHO :high5:
First of all, I have a complete collection of mint sets and proof sets from the last 50 years, so yes it is a prrof set and the mint mark is missing from the proper place. The statement I made about them being put on by hand in this year came from another thread where people were talking about the 1970 - s penny and how the mint marks were all over the place. It was stated in that thread that they were put on by hand and that there was a whole zone they could have ended up in. Tha was what i meant by my earlier statement.
I noticed your from Illinois. So again I bring up the possible flea market, if that is where you may have purchased that set. From my experiences with some flea market sellers of coins is they seldom have little knowledge of coins except from a few year old listing picked up somewhere. This is expecially true of some of the sellers around the Chicago Suburb areas. That is why I mentioned if you can remember where you purchased that set you may well want to go back and look for more of the same. You never know. I too have all those proof and uncirc sets and every time I read something like this I run and look at all mine in hopes I have one too. Just doesn't work that way with my collection though.
