Thanks. Yeah, if you can afford a better grade 16-d, by all means go for it. They start going up in price fast after G-4, since they are much more scarce. It's not like the 09-s vdb where VF/XF specimens are a dime a dozen. I like mercury dimes, but it's not my main collecting focus so I'm just not willing to shell out mega bucks for the key. I just wanted to get one solid for the grade. Some AG-3s are really sad looking....I can't even read the date on this one.

It's not just the postion of the mint mark, but the shape of the mint mark itself. As I recall, the 1916-d used the same punch as was used for the 1914-d...and they changed the next year.

Yak, it is the same mint mark as the 1914-D Lincoln, the D mint mark on the 16-D dime was retired after the 1916 coinage.

I apologize to anyone who read this earlier. I wanted to correct my previous incorrect statements with real facts.

According to PCGS the 1916-D and 1917-D mercs have different mint marks. The 21-D half has a same characteristic shape inside of the D, but is not the same punch.

Nice coins Kanga and Jello! Maybe someday I will own a higher grade 16-d. I'm happy with my humble AG-3 for now.:D

Yeah, I remembering seeing that one on heritage and thinking it was stronger than mine. The ones in the new NGC holders seem incredibly strong. That one is stronger than most G-4s too.

Do you think it is under graded though?

It could very well be. However, there is also a chance that NGC silently "net" graded it for some reason. I would certainly pay AG-3 money for it, but his asking price is a bit high unless I was certain it was overgraded. I paid $250 less for mine than what he is asking. With that said, his definitely has G-4 to G-6 details.
