Yeah, had to go with none. Like Paul said, stick with the classics. Why spend more on modern bullion when for the same or even less money you could buy a real numismatic coin containing the same bullion, but a million times the history and significance? But, if I were forced at gunpoint to choose from your selection, I'd go with the silver bars as I think it would be the wiser choice.

Finally, something I can agree with :eek:hya:

There are no rules when it comes to you deciding what to collect. It can literally be anything you like. And it absolutely does no thave to be a "set" of anything. It does not even have to be a type set. It can just be coins you like for whatever reason. I collected that way for many years.

But, as I have already cautioned you, do not focus on profits. Focus instead on collecting quality and make sure you like what you are collecting. You'll find that in the end you will be much happier by following that method.

As to what to suggest, branch out, look at some of the world coins. They will make US coins pale in comparison.

Totally agree. It took me a little while to believe this, then a long while to truly accept it. "It's a long way from the head to the heart."

Which begs the question "How does one determine quality ?". And that is the subject of dozens of threads on this site.

I disagree with the notion that US coins are "pale in comparison". I feel that's "painting with a broad brush".

If an American says the entire world's coins are "pale in comparison", he'll be accused of xenophobia. If it's wrong for Americans to say we're better than everyone else, it's equally wrong to say we're worse than everyone else.

I've perused world coinage a bit, and there are some I like. Maybe I'll get excited one day, maybe not.

One problem for me is the "learn up" proviso. I don't have time or brainpower to have deep expertise on such a broad topic as the world's coinage over many centuries. Rather than have shallow knowledge of much, I'm shooting for deep knowledge of less - I'm specializing. I prefer early Federal period US... mostly pre-Seated stuff.

    That's plenty challenge for now.

I would think you could buy some more nice keys. I'd rather do that than a large bullion purchase. Why not spend some dough and get a nice early dollar/half in nice condition?

I suppose if I had a big budget, I'd prefer to get something with some history - even if I do like bullion :)

i prefer modern coins. cause older issues will always become classic. like i never like those coins in the roman era. next generation will simply like modern issues too. cause those coins will always grow old with them. no wonder the mint sold a lot each year.

Out of curiosity how do you mean this(strike, design, etc.)? Is there a specific world coin you have in mind? I know you like medieval coins, but not sure that is what you are referrring to. Not sure anyone can convince bnb of moving to other areas, but you never know about the rest of us. :)

I see what you're saying.. Let's not throw all US coins here under the bus like Doug may suggest ;)

    US coins are beautiful.

I love the way the Buffalo looks. It's such a handsome coin although I'm not sure how much money you'll ever make on it. I will still buy a couple over the next years if I can afford it.

As for the silver bar I already have one and use it as my pillow.

Darn shame he does not use my local coin shop. They have a beautiful 1916 SLQ at the shop, along with 1860-O, 1861-O double eagles, 1856 Flying eagle(problem coin to be avoid - nice details only 10k thou), 1799 eagle, not sure what the 1805 gold was - there were quite a few that I expect them to have sold. There there are several 1790's bust dollars and a 1803 bust dollar. All are beauties in my eye - but for that kind a money I would want someone better to review them. They always let me look thru the special box - I have found a few in there that I bought. I think there was a couple of 10k Morgans also(I think one was a 1895 plain) - can't remember the other coin. To me those were low MS coins - kind of baggy, but still very nice. Lots of things to look at, but who knows where bnb will bounce next.

Did you know that the Late P.T. Barnum was the president of the Pequonock Bank in Bridgeport, CT. As president he had to sign the banknotes that were issued for circulation. He only held the job for a year or two, probably more as a publicity stunt than anything else!!

P.T. Barnum is also on the 1936 Bridgeport commemorative half dollar (page 290 of 2010 Redbook). Perhaps that could be the next coin for Mr. BNB????
