Saw this listing on eBay and as I am relatively new at this I wanted to get your opinions. Does this coin look cleaned to you? Notice the lines. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks! http://cgi.ebay.com/1921-P-Silver-P...mQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item518d69202c
I'm gonna go with a brillo job on that one. At my club show this past week, someone had a 1921 Peace dollar in the auction for $50. I was very excited, because I usually pay close to $100 for them, regardless of condition. It was so badly worn, though, and then someone had the nerve to polish it too. I passed even at $50, though I was still tempted to use it for a pocket piece.
It almost looks like the lines are in the plastic holder, not the coin. I wouldn't risk it though. Freddypm
First thing are the lines on the obverse of the coin or are they on the plastic. It has AU details, but.
Lines on the plastic Hmmm ... I just sent the seller a message asking if the lines were on the coin or the holder. I'll let you know his response. I did check his other sales and he had some slabbed 1921 Peaces that were graded as "cleaned" by the TPG but he did not list this in the description. Interestingly all of his feedback is positive.
It looks as if Charleton Heston may have dragged it behind his chariot on the set of Ben Hur. Seriously I would be super careful about buying anything that is unslabbed by one of the trusted grading firms from EBAY. There are even sellers that use grading companies that will slab anything at any grade they desire (check out Snakesrus/Hertel Coins). Some have also figured out a way to get multiple positive responses for sales on ebay. This makes that whole system a joke.
This coin looked kind of like it's in PCGS holder, maybe it's graded as genuine cleaned, so seller didnt show holder.
It is a shame that they cleaned this one. The details look quite good. Why they cleaned it, I have no idea.
It looks like the lines are on the coin to me. It is sad, because it looks like it might be mint state otherwise. There is a lot of luster remaining that can be seen through the cleaning. There is also some toning as well. My guess is that the "cleaner" wanted to get rid of the toning, but he used something extremely abrasive and really didn't accomplish the goal.
Seller's reply I wrote to the seller and asked if the coin had been cleaned, since he did not indicate this in the description - he replied that it had been "lightly" cleaned. So when asked he was somewhat honest. Yes its a shame because it could have been a really nice coin. Thanks everyone for your input. Of course I am going to pass on this one and just wait till I find one I can see for myself in person.
