1 Reichsthaler - Friedrich II

    got this from someone on reddit. coin is pretty nice, biggest coin i have since i collect mostly ancients. i really liked the eagle on the reverse, so i impulse bought this.

    Nice Prussian piece. Neat design. Is that the trace of an old mount at the top, on the rim above the H in REICHS? Wouldn't be all that unusual if it was.

    It’s a nice one, it was my first date/mint of Frederick the Great too, then I was very lucky to get the real deal, a 1764 Kaliningrad/Konigsberg piece!
    It’s actually a small sized type in the world of thalers!

    I've had a minor denomination or two with that design, as I recall, but no full thaler.

    This piece is known as "Sterbetaler" (The death thaler) alluding to the date of the monarch's death, the letter A placed in the middle of the mint date, 1786, has been interpreted over time as 17 A(ugust) (17)86, the date of Frederick II's death.
