telemyz - you asked an age old questions, that is very hard to easily explain :) taking images of coin is one of the most difficult things to do correctly. For my coins, i dontuse flash! Flash is too bright, too direct and completely uncontrollable. I use ambient light, and then flood the object with that. use an old milk jug to cover a light bulb (be sure to do it safely so the lightbulb doesnt burn the plastic) add 2 to 3 of those around your coin, and you should have ample light to choose from. it might be asier with a digital camera that allows you to adjust settings like aperature and speed.

the easiest answer is to practice, and see what method works for you. Because there are so many different cameras out there, a setup that works for 1 member on 1 camera, wont work for another using a different camera.

Good luck - and dont be afraid to start a thread showing some images you took and asking for comments or suggestions :)

thanks so much for your response. I will try again at some point. Coins are so small, so yes, I will have to practice. Hope to learn a lot from being at CoinTalk.

trust me - i take pictures of my own coins - but they are FAR fromthe ebst! There are member on this forum who take absolutely stunning images!

I bet if you were to practice taking pictures, and start a thread asking for help and/or comments -- i bet you one of those folks would chime in :) There is also a book out about taking images of coins.... i cannot remember the name of it though dangitt!! Either a member on this forum wrote it, or contributed to it ... i hate when my memory completely fails me :D

Try reading the first post in this thread. Your original picture MUST be less than 250KB or else you will get those little previews.

When trying to post pics from PhotoBucket you have to use the Insert Image icon (it's that little square yellow icon with what looks like 2 mountains on the bottom at th etop of your posting box). Or, just post a link to the PhotoBucket picture.

To use the icon, open your picture on the PhotoBucket page in one browser window and have Coin Talk open in another browser window. Then copy the url address for the PhotoBucket page that looks like this - http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t287/gdjmsp/17568realerev.jpg?t=1255547741 - then click on the Insert Image icon here on Coin Talk and when the little window opens, paste that url into it and hit the Enter key on your computer. This is the result -

To just post the link, do what I did above and just paste it into your post.

    scan

I recently read a post that someone put the coin in a scanner. What do you think? As long as putting coins on the scanner bed does not damage the scanner/printer. Afraid to try. Waiting to hear what someone else has to say. Thanks.

It will not harm your scanner at all. I have scanned hundreds and hundreds of coins.

It does create a little work for you though. For once scanned then you have to edit and crop the pic, and sometimes re-size it or you'll end up with a picture to post that turns out to be the size of a flea.

Why Doug... do you have a really old scanner?

Most scanners i see these days have the ability to select the part of the preview screen you wish to scan, this eliminates the need to edit the photo after. It might not eliminate the desire - especially if you like to enhace the photo, add a logo ect. I dont know about all new scanners, but alot also add the ability of batch scanning. place 20 coins on the scan bed, select them, and get 20 different jpg's, gif's, ect....

personally, while scanning is SO much easier then taking photos, the image from a camera is much nicer then a scanned image IMHO

    scanning coins

Thanks for the info. I will definately give it a try. I will try it with my largest coin first and see what happens. At some point I will post it, just to show how it turned out. :)

Wheaties fan - yes, you certainly have the tricks to uploading images down pat :thumb:

now to get the images of the coin even bigger, yet retain the same file size - crop the background stuff out, so that the edges of the coin are the outside edge of the image. MSPaint can easily help you do that.

In no time, you will be posting ginormous images quite easily :)

Nope, I sold it to another CT member. But yeah, it was really old. And like some other really old things, it had a certain quality that the modern junk just doesn't have ;)

I agree, it is easier. And if you are lucky enough to have a really old, but good scanner, and you know what you are doing, you can take scans that are every bit as good as any image taken with the best of cameras ;)

Good, now just crop your pics in closer to the coin and you'll have this down pat ;)

I will agree with you here 100%! alot of scanners these days are complete ... well, a waste of money! I have been searching for an affordable scanner that will do what i need for close to 2 years now. Still got my plumb-awful epson.
