I have a few(maybe 2 or 3) half dimes and several older dimes, but don't actively collect them. I think if you searched on my name you could find pictures of them.

I tried to, back before I gave up on US coins. A date/mintmark collection of G-VF half dimes would sure be a thing to see.

I really like dimes. My main focus is Roosevelts but I have a few Mercs and Barbers. No half dimes, yet.

I collect them as part of a type set. Here are a few (the '37 HD was cleaned, and purchased as such).

    Opportunity knocks...

Not an area that I pursue, but clearly one with promise for the dedicated collector. One of the glaring anamolies of The Red Book is the pricing on Bust Dimes and Half Dimes. Issues with half the mintage have the same price as the more common. It has been like that since Day One. Whether this truly reflects a golden opportunity for the aficianado remains to be seen... over the next 40 years... But clearly, if you wish to pursue these, you have an open door to finding your own value in the acquisitions.

Byron Reed (not the famous dead one) has a special interest in these and has done much to support their study. See his webpages at

Don't really collect them too hard. They're just another type that I once in a while get the urge to add to the collection. I'm a big fan of the Liberty Seated design and their reverse with the later variety wreath.

I nabbed this one off Ebay last night. It's a two tails 9, Breen variety:

For my type set I have an example of each dime issue back through the Capped Bust design, both varieties.
For my type set I have an example of each half dime issues back through the Capped Bust design.
I'm also trying to put together a set of all the Red Book listed Capped Bust half dime varieties. It's not easy finding them in the XF/AU grade range with original surfaces.

Tough coin. Many had the rusty die problem making it even tougher.
