Does anyone have a complete list of the major Lincoln cent varieties? Thanks!

I have never figured out #19, 1960-D , small date got in there over #24- 1917DDO and #25- 1936DDO #2.

The reason I asked is because I want to build display cases for each decade of the lLincoln cents using air-tites and needed to know how many "holes" I would have to leave open to cover what I do not have... Opinions? Thanks in advance!

 

I think LCR's list needs to be reworked. A few varieties moved around, some taken off (like the '41S with large S) and some added (like the '46S inverted ball serif).

As far as (number of) spaces needed per decade...that would have to be up to the collector. I think one would need to research each area of variety collecting, compile a list of what is significant and rare, then factor in the amount one is willing willing to spend per coin (or time spent trying to find it) and make a personal master list. For me, emphasis would be placed on doubled dies, but that's just me. Another person may like RPMs or Wrong Design Varieties more.

it's probabally not the right place for this question but what would cause a 2009 formative years to look loke lincoln is being speared from behind? i was going thru some rolls of them and came accross one that has a slightly raised line going from the m in america thru his jaw, then it fades after the jaw with two raised areas like a, if you will, bullet fragmenting at the end. i thought this was neat and creepy as well,tried to get some pics but couldn't get any decent ones as of yet and am thinking of sending it to k. potter or mr wexler just out of curiosity

thanks, we tried that today, a friend of mine has one of those 800 dollar nikkon cameras and got frustrated that he couldn't get a good pic with all the detail so he's going to read his manual and we'll go from there, i'm new but old to all of this if that makes sense but what is plating bubble? i don't think it's a gouge but i am more than likely wrong i am just learning alot of this and again thanks

 

Where does the 1992 close AM fit on the list/s? It would be my #1 pick.

 

I believe this list was meant to contain realistically obtainable varieties which preclude the inclusion of ones that, at least for now, are far from that. On a deep-pocket list I would include varieties like both the '92 CAMs, the '69S DDO, maybe the '58P DDO and maybe a few others...

 

I was thinking on the line of an absolute complete list of major varieties.
Not just realistically obtainable ones but all known major ones that are known to exist or did exist for Lincoln Memorial cents.

 

If that were your criteria, an accepted variety, then the '58P DDO-001, the '69S DDO-001, the '70S DDO-001, the '82P SD DDR-001 should probably come well before the '92P CAM and the '92D CAM, followed by, maybe, the '88D reverse of '89 as these three are still findable and could see large drops in prices and popularity (of course the opposite could also occur). Somewhere within this mix you would probably put the '55P DDO-001 and '22D no D (die 2). Then one wold have to decide if proof issues should be included. :desk:

Very complicated and time consuming. A concrete rational needs to be stated with any list. I am going to dwell on this...

POST SCRIPT: Didn't notice that you said "...memorial cents," that would change the above list with the removal of the '22, '55 and '58...

Certainly there are Top 50 and Top 100 but "major Lincoln cent varieties?? Who knows? I mean is major only 1972-P die #1 - what about die #4?
Attributors have Top varieties but what about the ones left out? What about the classics? What about ones that there are only 1 or 2 examples of such as the "ones you are not going to find", such as 74 Aluminum or 58-P DDO.
What I am trying to say is make your own list the way you want it to be, include well known ones if you want but make the project yours.
Lists are a combination of, popularity, availibility, value, strenth of doubling, and most important, "what catches on with the public" more than anything else. ( A good example is 1959 DDO -001, EDS is just about as nice as 1980-P DDO-001 but only commnds a fraction of the 1980's price. There are far fewer know 1959's than 1980's but it does not matter). Any list prepared by a known attributor will leave out and or include coins that some may find lacking or dissagree with.

I would not have considered this issue as major when there are so many others much more dramatic ahead of it. I mean it's a big one in a sence but it don't "sit up and slap your grandma" so to speak.

 

Granted, it might not be in the top 10 but its not a variety that sells for a couple bucks either. it looks like the price has settled around 30's for circulated ones. here is some that have sold on ebay just recently that i looked up. Snowman
