I bought this 1946 Jefferson nick awhile back and I am just wondering are these common? Common error and not worth much? :eating:
I was just looking at a pile on my desk and this was sitting there. It's a 1944P. I think it's some kind of planchet error.
Is there a thin layer missing rockdude? I have a Liberty nickel just like that. A layer is missing in an area, but the strike is still visible.
Yes, even part of the rim is missing like it was shaved away, except the strike is still there. I do believe it's a 'split planchet' or a delamination.
The 1946 has a lamination error. It is pretty good but not rare. They are very common on earlier nickels in general. The 1944 P nickel is a partially split planchet. What is weak is where the rest of the coin was before it split. Thanks, Bill
Here is mine. I think I got a good deal on it for $5 shipped on e**y a few years ago. It's an old pic with a terrible reflection, but you can see where the thin layer split off and there was still detail underneath. The TCs coin looks like it is about to split off.
