I'd like to boycott buying those hockey pucks but that would only help the collector value if few sell and mintages turn out to be small. rock and a hard place. I also don't hold out much hope for interesting designs in the pucks but the sizes are novel.
There are many who expound on this forum about all of the "junk" that the mint sells and many times I take excetion to what they are saying but in this case....JUNK.
do you know how many 4 pc lincoln cent proof set?. you have to add all these to get the result: clad proof set - 1,158,246 (not final) silver proof set - 521,060 (not final) lincoln proof set - 138,289 (not final) chronicle set - 50,000 (presume all sell out) total - 1,867,595 set. (not final). that's mean you can get that much of 4 pc lincoln cent proof set.
novel junk then i'm not buying into it. silver is bulky enough to stow as it is, then figure the boxes that will come with these or the huge TPG slabs that will be needed to encapsulate them. as elaine might say, "no way jose"... saving my nickels for something more like gold coins.
i hate spot on a coin. specially when we buy directly from the mint. and it is a proof coin. it should be new and perfect at least. all coins should be inspected before send them out. well. i might just pass and not buy any Lincoln proof set in the future. well actually i got 100 clad proof set. i should have 100 Lincoln proof set inside too. i did not open the box. so i don't know anything about spot exist or not. no time for that.
There's always time, you just have to make time for it... I'd rather know now when I have the opportunity to return the damaged sets, instead of finding out later that I have defective quality merchandise, or gave a gift that looked bad, or couldn't sell the item easily with spots. Elaine, I agree, the US Mint Quality Control is poor and needs to be vastly improved. Here it is a time issue to the detriment of the hobby and their product, overhead and success. The Mint may be able to produce a lot of coins and different products quickly but at what cost, for quality. This is what I fear we are seeing with the ASE, no Proofs because it takes too long to produce higher quality coins instead of cheaper bullion that can have spots and weak strikes... the Mint is profit greedy, especially this year. This is one reason I buy Proof coins and avoid UNCs and clad coinage. And it is the reason I was willing to try the 4 pc Lincoln Proof sets with 95% copper coins. I am hoping the quality is there. I always seek quality over quantity.
good point and thanks Krispy. i will follow your advise. well. it looks like the gold is down from its all time record high. hopefully it will recover tomorrow. and continue upward movement.
