For some reason I've been going crazy over Panama Silver and Gold..... Why is this? I do not know.... but I HAVE TO HAVE more Panama Silver.... is this a disease? should I be worried? I just picked up FIVE 1953 1/4 Balboas coins on ebay for $12.00!!!! Thats .906 ounces of silver. God I love how central american currency has the purity and weight stamped on them.... now thats smart minting!!!!!!!:kewl: (please suggest any Panama Silver 12-Step program)
Yup, those are the silver ones! Nothing wrong with being hooked on silver, no 12 step program needed! Enjoy the sickness and the habit, as far as I can tell it's totally healthy!!

My two favorite Panama coins in my collection! I really like the design used on the obverse of the Un Balboa for the fews years that they were minted with this design. Also, I love that the Very early 1900's Panama Silver coins were larger. Like the Ten Centesimos is the size of a Quarter about:thumb:

My perscription: Buy two in the morning, and if the symptoms don't subside, buy two more When I first got into collecting coins as a true collector last year, one of the very first coins I bought was a 2 and a half Balboa from Panama. Pretty sure it's nickel, and not silver, but I don't mind. WWII era...I fished it out of a 10 cent a coin world coin bin in my first ever coin shop visit. I find their currency system interesting, and that you are getting a piece of the person...LOL! I actually just got an example of their equivalent to the quarter in change earlier this year, that was a surprise, it had been more then a decade since I got a non-Canadian world coin in change.
To my knowledge Panama has never minted a 2 1/2 Balboa. They minted a KM# 16 2-1/2 CENTESIMOS (1940) Copper-Nickel Obv: Uniformed bust left Rev: Written value
That is it! The reverse legend is "dos y medio centisimos de Balboa" As I don't speak or read Spanish, I took that to mean two and a half cents of a Balboa. I must have interpreted it wrong!
Yes that is the correct interpretation (two and a half cents of a Balboa) but earlier in the post you claimed having a WWII era 2 1/2 Balboa.. Which if they had made one would have been silver
Very nice coins and nice price. Your post made me look up the coins in Krause and I found, to my surprise, that much of Panama's official coinage (1975-1985) was minted in the U.S. by Franklin Mint, the people who sell the diecast cars, colorized coins, and other cheesy collectibles. It just struck me as odd.
I like the 1904 type and have done a denomination set for it. always looking for an upgrade on the largest coin and they get very pricey in higher grades. the smallest coin in that set is known as the panama pill and is 10 mm in size and is silver :thumb:
