Today I checked out a book on US paper money from the Library it is the 23rd edition Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money. All the pictures are black and white so that was a bummer but I mainly wanted to learn some without having to bore you all with repeatedly asked questions. That being said here is a question. There is a chapter on Note-Issuing National Banks It list each State and each city and each branch what I would like to know is how or where can you locate money from a bank in a certain city? I live in Henderson Texas and thought it would be neat to have a Bank Note from a Bank in henderson. According to the Charter # there were some issued in 1930 from the bank I use now. I am not asking for someone to sell me one or to trade for something I am just wanting to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks for any help Kent

  6. Good luck Kent! My local National issuing bank has exactly 4 known copies of...I doubt I will ever get one of them. I've lived in the same town my entire life, there were no known Obsoletes, and only 4 known Nationals...the problems with small town USA, I suppose! Even if one of those 4 DID surface on the market, I probably could not afford it anyway.

I will have to settle for the large city that borders where I live and county notes.

Let me just comment on "known examples" - those are examples that are reported by auctions, collectors etc. and are noted in the Don Kelly book. Just because there are only 4 known examples doesn't really mean much. I have an original series ie 1875 $20 National from Ohio that has been unreported, probably because from the 1930's until 2008 it sat in the collection of a Grand Rapids Michigan banker's collection. I also have a couple of other early Nationals that are unreported.

I would look at the numbers reported as indicative of scarcity, not as an absolute number.

  8. Good advice...I realize that there are probably others out there....but remain unreported. Even so, 4 is not a lot...certainly a scarce note! (I have not even been able to turn up a picture of one!) I am guessing that there are probably less then 25 around, but who knows where. I base that number on, if there are 4 known, there are probably some in private collections that people choose not to report, or don't know how to report or that even the report exists, and some more likely reside with some people who aren't currency collectors but saved it for whatever reason. Maybe 25 is too high or low, I don't really know...just a guess. Where I'm from is not a very wealthy area, in fact I would wager a guess that I probably am the least wealthy collector on both boards I post on...and this has always been a poorer area, so setting aside bills probably didn't happen often.

No. The name comes form Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, the commander of the German armies in East Africa during WWI. Notes from German East Africa is a specialty of mine. The story of the Great War in Africa is a fascinating one.
