I think what generally happens is as you having declining mintages [or sales] the past issues do not appreciate in value beyond bullion value because demand has fallen below the larger supply of those coins.

So with the spouse coins the last normal one with ended sales was Louisa Adams which sold 4223 UNC coins.

Right now i would say that is where the demand is with these coins, the Jackson Liberty sold more than Louisa because of the added Classic collectors which was about 500 more sold.

So the lowest mintage so far is Louisa but i think with higher gold that coin will eventually be surpassed by even lower sales down into the 3900 or even lower.

Not many people can afford this series with gold at $1000 and the high premium the mint charges.

If gold crashed down to say $500 an ounce then sales of the coins would INCREASE though and the Louisa may end up being the lowest coin though.

By pure dumb luck, as a new gold buyer I hit a home run buying Buffalo proofs from the Mint last year. But now I believe that the Buffalo prices have peaked and I am looking to get in on the beginning of the next hot gold coin.

Can anyone advise me on my tentative decision to buy about a dozen First Spouses? A very large precious metal exchange from whom I've bought dozens of Buffaloes has them on sale for $545, proofs or uncirculated. By comparisom, they are selling 1/2oz bullion Eagles for $575.

Am I about to buy something that will always be worth less than Pesos?

I imagine you having a jar on your mantle full of quarters you saved on your FS purchases!

I agree...which is why I "double up" on each edition that looks like it may end as the new "key" to the series. If gold prices go up, I can sell the dupe and have plenty of money to buy the next "key" coin before it closes. If gold prices fall, then I doubled up on a true "key" to the series. Seems like a Win-Win scenario.Eventually, I think any of the coins with mintages below 8,000 will trade above bullion (perhaps significantly as the collector base grows). It may take 20 years or more, but I'm betting it happens.

I have to own both the Uncs and Proofs because the Proofs look soooo much nicer...but I can't resist the low mintages of the Uncs! I'm hoping the Proofs become popular jewelry items...reducing population in pristeen condition...it could happen!Bottom line...this series won't go up in value unless more people start collecting them. A lot depends on the economy. We've had economic setbacks before, but we've always recovered (eventually) to a raging bull market. Now is the time to buy...sometime later will be the time to sell. This week may be a buying opportunity since prices may go back up next week.

LOL! I guess so, since you bought so many of them today. I can't believe how many you wanted to pic up at once. Does it affect your decision to keep the order based on the other 2009 gold coins to now be released this year?

honestly speaking. specially to you my dear friend krispy. i don't like any of mint gold coin offer soon. just stick to UHR and spouse gold.

reasons. bullion gold - no way jose. proof and bullion american buffalo one ounce. mintage might be high. i will pass all of these. next year 2010. that's another story. let's see.

elaine, You think 2009 Proof Buffalo one ounce has a chance to be a high mintage? How many could already be produced? Not much time left to run up a huge mintage before December when they'd start cranking out 2010 pieces. Can they leave 2009 coins on sale through 2010? I'd like more buffalos and low mintage would be awesome for future numismatic value.

krispy. the real low mintage were the fractional am buffaloes. since they are not producing anymore. that's why those went up and will continue to go up and up. as for one ounce buffalo, see below:

    bullion buffalo: one ounce
    2006 - 337,012
    2007 - 136,503
    2008 - 189,500

    proof buffalo: one ounce
    2006w - 252,000
    2007w - 60,000
    2008w - 19,591 this one took off.

either selling time extended or end december 31. mintage should be high.
    1. time extended to next year - many people would like to buy some.
    2. end december 31 - those gonna buy will buy more. institutional investors and rich collectors like you will go for this too. well all this is only my opinion. as i said it again. my pass prediction is 80% accurate.

Really you've gotta remove that "rich" comment. LOL! I'm a modest collector and I just like to have one Mint product and one graded version for my collection. Again, not rich, just selective and happy to buy the kind of product that will continue to be worth something. ^_^

    thanks again for the info

    unc spouse - $691.00
    proof spouse - $704.00
    UHR double eagle - $1,439.00
