I'm sure it's not much, but is there any value to a 1938 Canadian 5-cent piece, in about EF-45? Got it from a customer at work recently. Joe
Krause catalog (from 1996, the best I could afford to buy) lists it at &\$7.00 for EF - 40, but I've gotten barely circulated ones around that date for under a buck in coin buckets and ebay lots.
Thanks - I figured it wasn't much. I was just so surprised to see it - It's really close to AU, and it just came out of some lady's purse with all the American coinage. I've only received three or 4 AMERICAN nickels of that age from customers... Joe
I check all the change I can get my hands on daily and pull out decent # of wheatbacks, ww2 nickles, silver roosevelt dimes and foreign stuff and I do find a lot of early jeffersons in my possession, but of pretty low grades. It might not be worth much, but it's still a nice find you have there! oh and the price is from 2006 Krause, not '96. I made a mistake of how old my catalog was.
38...If I recall correctly that was the second year of the Beaver issue. (one of my all-time favorite coin designs). That is a great find. I've found a bunch of Canadians in circulation, as I spend so much time in Lake George NY, a popular tourist spot for Canadians, but never have I gotten one that old. In fact, when I was there earlier this month, I recived a 77 cent in change...well circulated, and I think the 4th or 5th 77 I've gotten, but it's still cool to get them in change. Congrats on your find.
The MARCH 2009 issue of COIN PRICES magazine lists the 1938 Five Cents in EF at $7US. Only 3,898974 were minted that year. JandM lists it at $15US. A local store, Allens, lists one at $12US.
Looking in the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins, 62nd ed (I have heard this referred to as the Red Book of Canadian coins)...this coin is listed as $15 in EF40 and $40 in AU50 (Canadian Dollars). The mintage is 3,898,974.
