Probably 80% of what I buy annually through the mint is subscription for a few reasons. I don't have to mess with ordering stuff, and I get in early either in case of sell-out, or in case of early production containing errors. Also, I don't do quick-flips, so its not that I need to get them quick, I just want them, so I can look at 'em as early as possible :p

Anyhow, unless you're talking about sealed government packing, or the scams mentioned in some of these posts, part of the problem with buying sets, etc. through Ebay isn't that the coins are messed with, its just that they are the lower-quality ones. Think someone buying 200 sets, eye-balling (or should I say jeweler's looping) them all, taking out what they expect to grade out at "70's", and selling the rest off. In other words, you're guaranteeing yourself that you've got a lower-quality proof/mint set by buying their scraps.

And I do love the subscription program. Just, if its tied to your checking account/debit card, don't forget if you have a big order coming in (did that once - oops).

Going to try the subscription program next year 2010 & see how it works out. I luv to get the early releases also, and I think if there will be errors you will have the best chances to receive them. I've also noticed that the later you order you take the chance of receiving returns from the mint, definitly don't want to go there. Be interesting to see if ordering live or through the sub program is the best :smile

This tampering thing really sticks in my crawl , the mint should crack down & take some kind of measures to prevent this:hammer:

I subscribe to just about everythng the mint sells. Never have a problem, Get em before anyone else does and if they get lost in the mail (happened one time) there's a form to fill out and they'll replace the item(s). My credit card gets whacked constantly though with all the subscriptions. Not having to go online on opening day for a new set of coins saves a lot of hassle. $4.95 shipping on each order so make it worth your while and subscribe only to what you want to collect.

Just wondering if next years silver proof set will run over $ 52, got a feeling it'll go up in price since now they know people will pay it.

    troublesome ebay

I've been collecting silver proofs since '99. They've been opened once so I could view coins, they are beauties. I'm getting to the point in life that I'll have to pass them on. I've never wanted to use NGC or PCGS to grade coins, my thought being to just sell on Ebay when I needed money. Now I read that due to some sellers on that site, I won' get what the coins are worth. Seems more than unfair. So, I'm getting pushed toward grading all my coins. No wonder the certification houses are doing well. We can put more trust in their coin quality (and that's not a certainty). So what other alternative does a seller that hasn't cherry-picked through his coins have? Now, I'm even fearful of buyers that might buy, change coins, and return product. No wonder some sellers refuse to except coins back.
