My father started my son with coin collecting this weekend. When we got home with several coin books, he wanted to go through the piggy bank and see what we had. In looking through the pennies, I found this 1975-D coin with a weird stamp of california and the letters CA in the center. Just curious to see if anyone out there knows anything about this.
Yes they were made around the time of the bicentennial Yes they were made around the time of the bicentennial and are a post mint product of stamping an outline of each state into them. I actually have a roll with all fifty states on 50 BU 1988 Lincoln's if anyone is interested I will sell cheap, just PM me for price.
bhp3rd, I gotta ask....made around the Bicentennial (1976) and you have a roll dated 1988 The reason I point this out is that I have some dated earlier and many dated later. Some have States, some have a Liberty Bell, some have cigars, or pipes etc. These novelty items have been made outside the Mint since before the Bicentennial and well into the 80s. I haven't seen any dated in the 1990s or later but I would be curious to know if anyone else has seen any. Thanks, Bill
I actually saw a complete set of all 50 state of these stamped cents today at the local coin show that was in Van Nuys, CA. I think the dealer was asking $25 for the entire set.
I have one with JFK's face stamped on it. I have no idea where it came from, I've had it as long as I can remember. It came on this info card which was bent in half long ago. I wonder why they left the big open space at the bottom? I recall seeing TV ads for those state outline cents a long time ago. It may have been on QVC or HSN, or it may have just been a commercial. I can't recall, but it was probably the late 80s or early 90s, a while ago now. Personally, I don't have much interest in them, and I don't even store the Kenedy example above with my other coins. (it was hot glued to the card, too!) I find it interesting that you/your son probably got that in change! Somebody must have been pretty desperate to spend that, I would guess. Or who knows, maybe they hoped somebody would find it and get them interested in collecting. Edit: After posting, I reread the card. Wow, I wonder who made that up? Lincoln founded the Republican party, and Kennedy was from Cape Cod, Mass...Southern if you are in Canada or Alaska or Maine, but...that's about it!
Your right I should have said Your right I should have said first made around the Bicen. some before, some after - the roll I have is 1987-D, 87-P so apperently they were made for a long time time. Mine have the outline of each of fifty states to the right of Lincol'n's face and the abbreviation within the outline.
Hi, They do turn up in rolls occasionally and I have a fair number of them that I've found over the years. The question about the blank space toward the bottom of the card had to do with space left for a vendor to place his own advertising information on the card. Have Fun, Bill
