A fellow member was talking to me via pm just now about the Gold buffalos.

What do you all think of them? I think they have great eye appeal..

But i'm trying to learn what might be a good year.. 06, 07, 08..

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks guys.

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

I have trouble believing in the long term on these coins outside of the bullion value (not that there's ANYTHING wrong with that!). So I'd try and cherrypick a super example in OGP for as close to spot as possible.

:loud: The 2008-W fractional proofs, without a doubt. The only year of issue for these.

Well, they are worth what someone pays for them, and on ebay, from what I've seen, that's at least 2x the price of what the mint used to sell them for.

The fractional buffalos were only minted in 2008, one year. In both proof and uncirculated. I wish I picked up a 1/4 oz one, but all I could afford at a time was a 1/10 oz uncirculated. I think the mint sold them for like $170 for the 1/10 oz, which I thought was high, until the US mint said they weren't going to make them ever again, as well as some other coins, and the price skyrocketed for them on ebay.

I would never send mine to a TPG for grading, I prefer the original packaging.

    Here's one that just sold:

And I have *no idea* why he says this:
These are collector versions (burnished finish, "W" mintmark) of the

official United States Mint American Buffalo One-Tenth Ounce Gold Bullion Coin.

What? These are the one tenth ounce buffalo's. Confusing..

    What does TPG stand for?

    TPG, third party grading.

Usually its TPGS (third party grading service) but I forgot the S.

Such as PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc

I think the 2008 fractionals might have some potential. I think the oz pieces are basically just so much bullion.

Well I'm looking for a nice fractional to own. Any fractional in particular?

    Buffaloes I know about.

First fact: Only the ones with "W" mint marks are collector coins. Anything else is bullion. All are 24K minted at West Point.

Second fact: "W"s come in two types: "Proof" and "Uncirculated". Proofs are shiny cameos, Uncirculated are burnished dull. Uncircualted were only minted in 2008.

Third Fact: Fractionals were only minted in 2008. They were minted in both Proof and Uncirculated types. $5=1/10oz, $10=1/4oz, $25=1/2oz, $50=1.00oz

Fourth Fact: 2008 was the lowest mintage of 1oz Proof.

The result of these facts is that 2008 1oz Proofs, all fractionals and Uncirculated are the highest priced Buffaloes. For example, 1oz 2006 Proofs are $1,150 to $1,350 on Ebay, while 2008 ones are ranging from $3,800 to $3,990. (Buy Now)
