How do they make those? I have a few Buffalo nickels with no dates they could use.

Nice hobos. I can't imagine having the patience or manual dexterity to do this!

There's a member, Bill Zach (???), that carves these things and posts them here from time to time. He's a true artist, IMO.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Very cool. I don't own any hobo's, but I think it would be cool to have one as a discussion starter.

    Good question..

Should I qualify my statement? Ah heck why not.

Through my limited experience in coins, I do believe these are modern hobos carved only within the year mostly. As I'm sure you know already, Charmy, hobo nickels have been around as a means of alternate currency for decades.. but I've noticed a steady improvement in the hobos throughout the years by looking at photographs from the 1930s - 2009..

For example, if you look back to the 1930's, the hobos then had punches all over the obverse and were usually designed by very untalented carvers, but now, the modern hobos have such an attention to detail which ends up making the coin look very professionally done. Usually because the right tools are used ie. dremel..

I'm guessing this one is modern... not sure Indians wore their hats backwards back in the 20s and 30s ;)

    Pretty cool collection though!!

yes, i would say every coin in the album is modern.

The vintage hobos can't even compare to the modern ones as in the 30's and even the 50's there weren't any Dremel tools around to use. Also now mostly jewelers are in the mix turning out these modern hobos like cupcakes. so there's plenty of competition and variety. Out of your collection this one is the best IMO. :high5:

why thank you. there are pro's cons to both modern/old school style but i'm more of a modern fan myself.
