Hi and Good Luck with your coin Collection. I'm still trying to collect those elusive 1935 (my birthyear) silver coins. The ones I still need are beyond my purchasing ability unless a lay-a-way plan is available. From time to time other coins (silver and non silver) have gotten my attention therefore I acquired some Canadian $5 Silver Maple Leafs, Canadian Silver Dollars (business strikes, some P-Ls and some proofs) and a few Aureate Dollars. I also have some Mexican Cap & Rays 8 Reales, Cap & Rays 1 Pesos, some 5 Pesos, some 100 Pesos commemoratives, all the Balance Scale Onzas and a few Libertads. Then Chinese Silver Dollars enticed me. Since I feel close to the Philippines people I've added a handfull of silver Pesos, 1 Pisos, 5 Pisos and 25 Pisos to my holdings. Researching the coinage of Panama, I bought all the silver 1904s plus the early Balboas ('31, '34, '47 and ;53) I fell in love with Bhutan's silver Ngultrums.Over the past year and half I've added the Sacagawea P & D mints. I have all the Presidential Dollars so far in Select BU plus all the Proof Sets in Gem BU and Cameo. What American coin collector could refuse owning the three Flying Eagle Cents, a dozen Indian Head Cents, ten Wheat Back Lincoln Cents, the '43 steel Cents, the first Lincoln Memorial Cent ('59), the 8 piece set of '82 Lincoln Cents, semi-key Washington Quarters, common and semi-key Walking Liberty Halves and 55 common Silver Dollars (Morgan and Peace)? The Maui Trade Dollar designs are to my liking so I have a complete collection of them from 1992 to date. In July I began wondering about what the new 2010 Maui $2 Trade coin will look like. I thought to myself, "I'm glad to have them. And those older Maui and other Hawaiian Trade Dollars sure enhance my Hawaii Collection." Then me opined, "Hey, in 2008 the Statehood Quarters series included Hawaii commemorative Quarters." As I studied about them I found the Quarters were struck in BU by Philadelphia and Denver. Proofs were minted at San Francisco in two varieties (clad and silver). I purchased the 2008 Hawaii P & D in Select BU and both proofs in Gem BU. While looking at them I thought to myself, "Boy, these are really nice. Maybe I should get more Statehood Quarters." "Yeah, but 50 states times 4 coins each state equals 200 quarters. I don't want that many." "What about collecting all the Statehood Quarters pertaining only to the states I once lived in?" "Let me ponder this. I was born and grew up in Ohio. In 1961 I moved to Florida. In 1968 I relocated to Texas. After my employer went bankrupt I inched my way to Missouri, but ended up returning to Florida. Couldn't find work, so took family to Indiana. Back to Florida. Then to Arizona, California, and Illinois. Back to Florida where I still am. That's it: Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio and Texas. Eight in all!" "I feel like there's more than this. Hmm. Oh wow! My Army years: Kentucky (Fort Knox, New Jersey (Fort Monmouth) and Berlin Germany (Military police). Three more; a total of 11 states. (44 coins)" "Okay I can handle that." All I need are the silver proofs featuring Kentucky, Missouri, and New Jersey plus the clad proof and the P & D BUs honoring Missouri. I'll think about the time I lived in Berlin later... Thanks for letting me share my thoughts Clinker
Great stories as usual. To bad you didn't travel more in more of the states then you could have started a I lived here state Quarter collection. This could be kept to just P or just D coins. It is sort of what you mentioned anyway. Me being German I sure wish you would have included some of those coins in your story. Oddly enough after over 60 years of coins I don't have any German ones myself. Been here to long I guess. You collection is sure diversified much more than most.
To Just Carl: Remember, I, in the past, wrote about my "collection in a collection" listing all the 1935 silver 5 Reichsmark coins KM83 featuring the church and all the KM86 W/Hindenburg including all the mint marks... Clinker
Collect what you like and you obviously are. Sounds like a wonderful collection filled with great memories.
Leadfoot: I started collecting in 1959, wrote an article on becoming a coin dealer for Income Opportunities Magazine in 1989, opened a coin shop in a flea market in 1995, sold out, retired and began collecting silver coins of the world dated 1935. So far this year I've added 1935 series One Dollar Silver Certificates. I posted an article on my Silver Certificates collection and all the different varieties I discovered existed while the collection's first 8 varieties slowly increased to 22. My latest acquisition is a VG 1935-A red "R" experimental note. Still thinking about the coins minted in Germany, or just the Berlin Mint, during October 1956 through October 1957... Art: Good of you to read and comment. Maybe, at a future date, I'll discuss some of the other hundred or so world coins, that found their way into my coin holdings... Clinker
